or worst engine ?

I'm getting rid of some excess engines and mower bits and i have about 4 quantum engines

1 from 20 odd yrs ago with the fully adjustable carb (3.5 hp), another on my 8 yr old victa (5hp). both made in the usa i assume

then there's a couple that were on chinese GMC mowers which i've wrecked. busted welds on bodies etc.both 5 hp. i assume the engines are chinese but no way of telling

t/y in advance, johnny

Havent personally seen one on a GMC mower, I do belive though the quantum was still usa made up until recently, but after the early 2000-01 era quality of the materials droped off severely.

As to which country builds the worst engine, I purposely ran a chinese one very hard with normal servicing intervals and it has around 370 hours on it and is getting very sad, almost to the point where I will scrap it soon. All of my usa made oldies, some are begginning to smoke but the good ones I have are up to 40 years old and have barely any wear inside them.

t/y mr C

i guess i'll keep the old 1 with the adjustable carb. it runs well on 30w, no knocks or smoke and i'm able to adjust idle etc

any idea on de-cypering the codes as to plant or country of manufacture ?

In the 8 digit "code", the first 6 are the date of manufacture, the 7th is the assembly line and the 8th is the plant. I do not know whether the Briggs plant in China has a number, or just has a different form of code.

Not a fan of the 3.5 hp quantums.

The 5hp's are the same as the sprint and 450 motors, if they are made in china they have the vertical ribs cast into the crankcase.

ok

however, just been looking at my local bunnings and the engines with "made in usa" on them have the verticle ribs

so, they've got me by the pullstart ...
