Hi Guys,

Just wondering what everyone is using to get rid of rust without attacking things with a grinder or wire brush?

I am also a member on a Hotrod Forum and there is a massive string on there with a lot of different ideas but a lot of them take ages to work and really get into the smaller parts.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

i use a vat of water and molasses, around 5:1

after degreasing parts fairly thoroughly, just plunk em in. check every few days and give them a bit of a scrub with a brush to see how the rust is

when done, wash them in hot water and IMMEDIATELY treat them with rust kill etc. or oil them if they're not being painted

this works a treat, but your workshop can smell like a rum shop and you may attract little insects etc

what i like about this method is that it's completely non destructive, so all your paint is going to stay put

p.s. don't put any aluminum in it, it eats it away. don't ask me how i know ...

So for Molasses you need to strip down everything and only put the rusty metal in there? I have to ask you what you did to the Aluminum grin

I use electrolysis, with a good power supply it only takes a day at the most. Although I wouldnt mind my workshop smelling like a rum factory lol

One thing is do not put stainless steel in electrolysis it makes a very toxic solution.

I personally prefer sand, bead or seed blasting....does the job....removes the paint and rust....leaves the surface just perfect for priming....and painting down the track...Costs money...but the end result is worth every cent! wink

Thanks guys good advice there.

Joe can you please expand on how you have it set up for me? I am considering the electro but also adding in a chemical to speed the process up. I didnt know about the stainless. Have you had any other issues with any other metals?
