I bought a 2nd hand Victa Commando with a B&S XM50 4 stroke engine.

The engine purrs along but the difference between idle and flat out RPM doesnt seem very much; what should i look for as the cause?

When the mower is running it vibrates pretty badly (horizontally) so I think the blade/cutting disc is out of whack. I've removed it from teh crank shaft and checked it- no major damage, cracks (even on the blades)etc. When looking in teh back of the mower while it runs i can see the edge of the disc the blades mount on is not steady; is this disc meant to be eliptical?

Lastly, the air filter was totally scunged up when I got it so I pulled the filter and carby off and cleaned the lot out. The air filter doesnt seem to be correct, there is a foam pad fused to some mesh but it doesnt seal the carby air intake off, the foam/mesh pad has printing on it mentioning a paper filter...

Any help would be great- I'd preffer no tto take it to the repair shop since I'm trying to keep the $ down.
Thanks in advance!

khan_au,

First off replace the blade plate as it is out of balance. That will fix the vibration unless the crankshaft is bent.

Then go to this link to download a parts list so that you can quote the part number for the air filter.

Thanks Bruce, i checked the crank shaft to see if that was the problem and it looks fine to me.

The RPM issue doesnt bother me as it has tonnes of power for the cutting im doing.

Theres always a reason why pawn brokers sell things cheaply eh? (i still think it was a good price...)

Hmm, well I found a friendly repair place when I was buying an air filter for my mower and he took a look at the thing today for me.
Turns out I wasn't careful enough when bolting the blade plate back on and hadn't got it centered propperly; hence the vibration! [Linked Image]

Nice guy solved that problem and the RPM one in all of 5 minutes and didnt charge me a cent!

Props to them- if your an Adelaideian it was Lawnmowers Plus up at Salisbury.
