Hi to all
My first post and great to have a forum for scott bonnar lawn mowers.

Woundered if someone could shed some light on a problem with a spring on the pull start of my Scott bonnar 45. The mower is 25 or more years old and seen better days but has been looked after and operates well . The last few times I have operated this mower ,yesterday it happened again , A few minuites after the mower is started there is a high pitched squiell from the pull start section of the mower, the pullstart cord is spun out of its wheel a small amount and remains loose. By pulling the cord all the way out and allowing it to recoil the squiell stops, then a minuite later the mower does the same thing. I have removed the pull start 2 or 3 times now and examined the internal parts of the spring and pull cord , after reinstalling the pull start back onto the mower the same thing happened again.
After it happened last night I ran the mower with the pull cord pulled out and tired the cord around the handle of the mower while i mowed, allias ,,no squiel. Do I need new spring?

Any assistance would be appreceiated. Thanks Johnno

Hi John, no you don't need a new spring, but the recoil starter is overdue for servicing. This is a fairly easy operation and does not involve replacing any parts, but it does need to be done carefully and line with the Briggs and Stratton instructions. (I take it your SB45 has a Briggs engine, as most of them do. If not, please say so. Also, if you give us the long series of numbers stamped on the sheet metal cooling air cowl of the engine, we can tell you its date of manufacture, among other things.)

The page in the B&S overhaul manual dealing with servicing the rewind starter is here:
http://www.tpub.com/content/recoveryvehicles/TM-5-4240-501-14P/css/TM-5-4240-501-14P_163.htm

(Note you can go forward and backward from that page using the "back" and "next" commands at the top of the page: the whole overhaul manual can be accessed in that way.)

Essentially, you just need to clean up the parts and put one drop (plus or minus zero, or you will cause yourself problems) of good-quality engine oil on the end of the crankshaft extension. The original equipment single drop of oil has finally been used up, after 25 years, and needs replacing; hence the squeal. While you are in there, clean up the parts, especially the balls and ball cavity, but do not lubricate them in any way. Any kind of lube in the ball cavity becomes sticky eventually, causing the sprag clutch to stop working.

You will probably find the B&S instructions self-explanatory, but if you have questions, just come back here and we'll try to sort them out. I'll leave this thread open.

Hello Grumpy

Thank you thank you .. sorry for not getting back earlier with a post I did read yesterday your post but didn't have time to post a responce. Much appreceiated your response and thank you for sharing your knowledge. And yes you were correct in all cases. Did the repairs as you advised and have just this afternoon mowed the lawn, and after 20 min of mowing no noise at all , all ran with no problem. I do recall the service man showing me this section of the start system back in 97 and I sure he probibly oiled the shaft then ,well it needed it again,as you said .
Now about the model number I did find one on the engine housing

Scott Bonnar 45 Model Type Code
80202 087901 80040903

The only number that I could say I recognise would be 08791 if this is the stamp for year of manufacture that sound about right i purchased this mower in 82 second hand so 08 is month and 79 is year if I am correct.

Again thanks for you help
Johnno

Johnno, the first six digits in the third block of numbers are the manufacturing date. Your engine was made on 9 April, 1980. It is an 8 cubic inch displacement (130 cc) and a "first generation" design (the second digit in the first block) with a horizontal crankshaft (surprise, surprise) and a Pulsajet carburetor (third digit in the first block), plain main bearings, and a rewind starter. The Pulsajet carburetor was Briggs' premium small-engine carburetor: it has a built-in fuel pump to lift fuel from the tank under the carburetor, into a small chamber right under the main jet's pickup tube.

Briggs does not have documents for precisely your engine, but here is the owner manual for the closest one they have:
http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/default.aspx?filename=flivAJX-nfBhU7y

and here is the illustrated parts list for the same engine:

If we can be of more help please let us know.
