Is that the model code, date code or what Aldo? There are usually three blocks of numbers: model, type, and code. Model is the size, series, and production options; type is weird stuff; and code is date of manufacture plus production line number.

Whichever it is, I don't recognise the two letters on the end.

Hello Aldot I assume you are referring to the code part of the “Model/Type/Code” prefix, if this is true I think this indicates the date of manufacture as 11 June 1996. I think, but may be wrong that 7FA indicas the Assembly line and manufacturing plant.

FA is the US state prefix for Florida, perhaps B&S have, or had a plant in Florida with up to 7 lines, this is just my guesswork no supporting evidence of this.

So it is 9 cubic inch (148 cc), design series 1 (pretty old - my 1976 9 cubic inch is series 2, but mine is vertical crankshaft), horizontal crankshaft, plain bearing flange mounting, with a rewind starter. The second block of numbers is a mystery to me as usual. The manufacture date is 11 June 1996 as OldViking said. The production line is usually 2 digits, for line number and plant number (my 1976 one was 08). So, I think all this means you've got an old design horizontal crankshaft engine, probably 3.5 hp. 7FA doesn't fit the traditional pattern for plants and production lines, so as Bob said, it might be a Chinese job - I just don't know.

I left a mesage with Briggs in Brisbane and they got back to me. They claim that only some of the horizontal motors have been made in China and only in the last few years. All vertical motor, of which this is have been made in the USA.

It is one I haven't seen before in that it has a panel type air filter which sits flat on top of the carby. The engine speed and choke controls are mounted on the engine so it has no handle bar mounted throttle. As you have said Grumpy it is a 3.5 HP. If they have engine controls on the engine itself are they usually for pumps or mixers etc or they can be adapted to anything?

They usually can have a speed control cable attached to them, or just a short piece of wire with a loop on the end, or a knob on the end of the bottom bell crank itself. The choke can be manual, automatic or coupled to the speed control like your edger engine. In most cases you can fit a remote speed control cable quite easily if it doesn't have one. The choke may be a different story - if it is manual I think it will have to stay manual.

Incidentally, Briggs describe the engine as horizontal or vertical depending on the way the crankshaft runs, not the cylinder. Your 91212 is a horizontal crankshaft engine - nothing vertical about it.

I've only seen and specifically heard about vertical crankshaft engines being made in China, and I thought they started a couple of years after yours was made, so I wouldn't doubt the Briggs guy's statements to you. I don't know what the 7FA means, though.

After having a good look it seems most of the gear is already there for cable attachement. It is under the fuel tank near the base. There is even the cable sheath retainer/clip.

There a few differences between this and my grandfathers engine. His is a 1980 build. I just need to hook the throttle setup and it should all be sweet.

Yes, you shouldn't need remote choke unless there is a cover over it in your mower.

That filter looks like one off a 35 quantum motor. Early ones were square and the later ones were rectangular.



I do not know that i would worry with a cable. Just set it too full noise and cut away.
