Help!
Is there something missing from this pull starter? Teeth of some kind?

Can you get after market? Machine them?

I’ve searched and searched for internet images etc but nearly to the point of giving up.

Any advice greatly accepted!

Photos attached (hopefully!!). Not very tech savvy here!!

Hi Blue,

Yes your starter is missing the 2 pawls , manual here but it doesn't show the pawls https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.a...ename/victa_workshop_manual_05_c1964.pdf

I have purchased some pawls before from eBay but sometimes they are missing because the alloy part that they slot
into is worn out and when that happens the pawls fall out ,so there is no point buying pawls if you need the alloy part
as well.

It's usually cheaper to buy another mower with a good starter than to buy the starter from eBay.

Cheers
Max.

Hi Max, have you tried fitting the later cup starter type into this housing to keep it looking original on the outside? just a thought

G'day Norm,

The 2 different types of Victa starters are different heights ,the starter cup would be to high up with the earlier starter
but you may be able to use a lower starter cup,It might be a good idea Norm if it fits in ,looking at the parts it looks like
it could be done.

I think you could grind up a starter pawl Blue from a high tensile bolt as long as the alloy part it fits in isn't damaged too much.

Cheers
Max.

If push came to shove you can always make a lower starter cup, possibly cut down a Chonda or Briggs one.

Thanks Max for your information.

I think I may give the eBay ones a go (it can’t hurt) as I have now stripped down and looked at the alloy part and they seem to be quite good still (to my untrained eye anyway)!!

I’ve had this mower for close to 28 years (it’s moved house with me a Couple of times).it was a family mower. It was always my intention to restore it - and now I’m making it a project for my son and I (and he’s loving it!!😊)! have some knowledge and practical skills - but limited in some ways too.

Those attachments from your first response have been very helpful. Thank you so much!

I’ll see how I go. As I said - it’s all a good bonding & learning project anyway.

My pawl retainer is attached below and one side is broken you can see the original pawl also, I find the later style pawls don't work as good as the original.

Shouldn't be a problem getting a starter cup to work Norm ,I think the later model starters are a better working starter but
I do like the original look of the earlier starters,.I once bought a burnt out $15. Victa 18 mower with melted base and carby
because the cowl and recoil starter were still good.

Yes that pawl holder still looks usable Blue and QSR has shown what they look like when worn out and the pawl
can drop out.

This is the first time I've tried these eBay pawls and QSR is right they are a little loose fitting compared with the
original solid ones that is in his second pic.

The eBay one is flat metal that is rolled for the round pivot ,I was thinking of hitting a small screw driver into
the round part to expand it a little for a better fit.

Cheers
Max.
