Gday all,

I am pulling apart my Scott Bonnar 45 (14") to repaint the body and do a general overhaul. I am having trouble removing the sprockets from the cutting reel and the rear roller. I am not a mechanic but not completely hopeless - is there a special tool (bearing puller?) that I should be using? Any help would be most appreciated!

Hi Leon, and a big warm welcome to the forum.
It's great to hear that you are restoring a Model 45, they are a great machine to work on and will give you heaps of satisfaction when it is complete.
Don't forget to take some photos as you go along and please post them on the forum as we all love to see 'em!!

P.S. While you have the cylinder reel and bottom knife blade assembly removed for painting, now would be the perfect time to have them re-sharpened if it needs it.

I took some photos - just got to figure out how to upload them. I think I have put the cart before the horse and have everything stripped apart except for the left side plate (looking forward), the front roller, the reel and the rear roller. Just to confirm, I should tap the cog with a piece of timber on the front side of the shaft (looking down)? It's not a reverse thread - just standard? I gave it a tap with a bit of timber and a hammer and it didn't give any. Are the normally stiff? Cheers fellas.

Fellas I have just posted 2 photos the sprockets in question. This gives you an idea of how I have managed to take everything else apart except the most important bits!

Hi Leon, yeah mate, you have disassembled the machine almost completely if you just wanted to remove the cylinder reel.You haven't explained why you wanted to remove the rear roller??
But at least now you can give everything a good clean and inspection and repaint if required.
Removing the reel is easy when you know how:

(1) Remove the side chain case cover.

(2) Loosen the nut on the black plastic chain tensioner and slide down in it's slot to create slack in the chain.

(3) remove the chain joiner and cylinder(reel) drive chain.

(4) remove the 2 screws on each of the reel bearing holders (they have the oiler in the top) and remove the top half.

(5) remove the nut (normal thread) on reel drive sprocket,and, using a gear puller (which is my preferred method,) remove the sprocket. (put the half-moon key somewhere safe as their easily lost)

(6) Lift the cylinder from the left hand end (looking from front of machine) and slide up and out.

(7) remove the nuts and bolts on the bottom knife blade holder and remove the complete holder.

You then take both the reel and knife blade assy to your engineering workshop for sharpening.
Easy-peasy!!
