Does anybody know if the gearboxes are the same in the Y22 and H26 models or are parts still available for the Y22 models as the early ones are now heading 40 years old

Hi Norm,

You could message Deutscher if no one here knows.

The Y22 is 5 Hp and the H26 was 10.5hp to 12.5 hp ,it's possible they used the same drive but usually the cheaper
models use cheaper parts.

Cheers

Thanks Max, I'm thinking the bigger hp might be the way to go.

Had a win with the one with the Honda on it, the bloke said that the motor was stuffed but it looked ok to me apart from the pull starter broken. Put some fuel in it,drill start and it fired straight up and runs fine. Only thing I am surprised with it is it is a GXV120, seems very small for a 22 inch self propelled. The other 2 have Briggs Intek's on them and I would assume these are probably 190cc or thereabouts?

Hi NormK,
that's a good break to have one going straight away like that. An easy profit for you there.

I hope the Briggs don't prove a problem and the Honda is up to the task!

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hi MF,
I think I will pull the Honda off and put it on an 18 inch push mower and get a new motor for that one. Got the carby off one of the Briggs in the ultrasonic at the moment so hopefully that will sort that one out

It looks like it was installed as a quick replacement. The Briggs are clearly larger engines up to the task.
What solution do you immerse the carb in?

Palmolive or Morning Fresh? Just kidding.

How do you make sure they're dry. Blow them out with an air gun?

Mf, I don't have to worry about them drying, the ultrasonic has a heater in it so when it comes out of the bath it is warm and dries in a minute or so. Then I give them a blow with the air through all the passage ways to make sure they are clear

G'day Norm and Mf,

Yeah can't go wrong with a Deutscher Norm ,good buy as you shouldn't have any trouble selling them once repaired.

The Y22 was released with a 5 Hp Briggs and the Honda GXV120 is 4 Hp so no harm in upgrading to a bigger motor.

The Briggs Intek's are 190 cc or technically 189cc.

Cheers
Max.

Yes Max,
I think $200 for the 3 of them is a good deal, then I can spend a bit of money on them and not worry about trying to get my money back. Helps a bit with this cost neutral hobby

Yep good deal there Norm.
It's worth fixing Deutschers slashers for a cost neutral hobby but a serviced push mower is a loss when people only want to pay $50.,. I see a lot of people just using electric push mowers around my area , must be less interest in petrol powered mowers now and a few people with solar panels and a Tesla that don't pay any power running costs.

Cheers
Max.

They would look nice with a set of day makers fitted.

Hi MF,
not sure what you mean by day makers.
Hi Max,
I'm thinking of converting the Y22 with the fixed front wheels into a single swivel front to see how that works out.

It is making me happier by the minute, the 3 motors run fine and from what I can work out the 3 transmissions work. Just waiting on 3 sets of belts from ODK and hopefully everything works My lucky day

Yes a single wheel at the front shouldn't be too much work to fit.

I don't think I've ever cut grass when it's dark or in the rain but I did see a guy down my street do both with his ride on mower .

The Rover ride on my high school got in the late 1980s had a pair of round headlights. I always wanted a drive of it.

I have a slight oil leak from the selector shaft on one of the Y560's and I need to remove the shaft so I can replace the "O" ring. What I am not sure about is what or how the end of the shaft engages to for it to select the gears. Looking at the exploded drawing I can't see what it is connected to. The shaft moves in and out to select the gears. Anybody have any thoughts?

Hi Norm,

The selector just looks like it slides the locking hub up and down the gear shaft with dog teeth that engage either gear.

A strip down of the parts must be done to replace the o ring as far as I can see.

Once the halves are apart I assume it's straight forward.

Cheers
Max.

As I figured, hoped there would be an easier way. Now to see if I can find a gasket somewhere before I split the cases

I picked this one up today but it being a 10.5hp motor it is too hard to pull start. Runs fine when it does start.
I have an old 11hp electric start motor and I'm hoping that I can swap the bits across to turn this one into electric start. Anybody have any thoughts on if it will fit. I think it has the 2 bolts to bolt the starter on and the fuel tank has a cutout to fit around the starter.

Maybe Briggo should have offered wind up impulse starter for this, but that would look too old fashioned for their image wouldn't it?

Hi Norm and Mf,

Hard to pull start can be a sign of excessive valve clearance as the compression isn't released for starting ,obviously you
can't adjust the clearances on Top Dead Centre.

The 10.5 looks like a newer motor than the 11 hp motor , if there's no ring gear on the 10.5 the 11 flywheel should fit.

I don't think you will waste much time if the parts don't swap across Norm. I would think you shouldn't have a problem
changing the parts over.

Cheers
Max.

Thanks Max,
I thought it should swap over without too many issues as long as the stator has the mounting points on the new motor. I don't think it is the valves leaking, it is just so heavy to get it spinning and I am just not strong enough these days to get it spinning fast enough to fire. It runs very well once you get it running. I will see how it works out.
MF,
This motor would need one very big impulse starter 10.5 hp requires big shoulders to get fired up
