Was driving past a house near my place during a council cleanup day and spotted this 4 stroke, so I walked back and grabed it since it looked very good! B&S motor etc.

I went outside my rules (Victa 2T's only).

Got it home cleaned the air cleaner, carby and the fuel tank (was full of mud) and it started first pull! I reckon it still has the original blades, and they are still ok!

Very unusual carby setup, but it works.

This is the same lawn mower i have in our shed but it has carby problems and the local mower shop tells me you can only buy the diaphram for them. They run small ball bearings around the carby in various spots and it will only keep running if i push the primer. Otheriwse the revs slowly drop and it dies. Is a great mower apart from that.

Council clean ups are a great source of lawn mowers etc. I have scored a Ryobi Whipper Snipper and a Mitsubishi Whipper snipper too. Both work fine after a carby clean and tune.

When I come across a good briggs motor with a clapped out carby I usually use one of the following options.

1. grab a good carby off a wreck out the back.

2. Pull the carby apart, clean it in a bath of petrol, scrub it thoroughly with a toothbrush, reassemble with a new diaphragm (wat it sometimes they try to fold over when you are tightening them down.

Another thing that can cause the motor to act up like you describe is a bit of dust and dirt can get into the governor flap that sits in front of the flywheel where it pivots and it holds the throttle shut.

Can't pull the carby apart really. Its one piece plastic. I spose i will have to keep looking for a new one. Do you know if its possible to remove the little ball bearings? Mower shop told me they are pressed in. I think they are the problem.

Once off the tank you can get at the main areas to be cleaned, the primer bulb is easily removed by pressing in the little plastic tabs on either side of it.

There is a pic on the forum somewhere I will try to find of a basic diagram of the carby.

I have tried to clean the carby out. Took the primer off and blew it out with some air. It does have a problem priming too. i Have to block the vent holes in the fuel tank to get it to suck fuel into the primer bulb. Would be much easier with a carby that can be taken apart. But it will only run for say... 30 sec to a minute before the revs slowly die and it eventually cuts out. However if i keep hitting the primer it will keep running. Which makes me think maybe its sucking air somewhere. What are the points of the Balls anyway? I can't see any explanation for it as they can't be removed at all.

hi,
sounds like the 'filter' on the end of the suction tube is blocked. try dismantleing the whole carby and cleaning it in petrol (not forgeting to take out the mixture screw) then blow a LITTLE air throught the whole carby. this has never failed for me and i rekon i would have done it at least 15 times to briggs suctionlift carbys.

Hey Mowernut.

It doesn't have a mixture screw. It's all preset and the carby is one piece. I have cleaned the carby afew times with clean fuel and blown it out with air. But makes it no better.

hi again,
try taking off the whole fule tank (1 bolt at end of cylinder and 1 bolt at frount of carby) after this take the 5 or so screwes surronding the carby on the fule tank and carefully pealing the carby fron the fule tank being careful to leave the diaphram attached to either the carby or the tank. once you have done this check the little piece of gauze at the end of the suction tub for a blockage. if it has any crud on the gauze swish it off in clean fule then swish the rest of the thing in the petrol and blow it out. make sure you clean the tank too while it is off. if after this is still dosnt go then its time to find a old carby on ebay or somewhere for it.
if all else fails i can always post a reco one to you cheep if you like.

I have had the carby off the tank numerous times and have cleaned the fuel tank out with clean fuel and blown it clean with air. I have had the suction tube off the carby and it is clean and also the other pick up that has gauze on it is clean as well. Could the metal balls that are in the carb have anything to do with it? If so can they be removed at all? As 1 or 2 of them are pushed in a fair way.

The top one (in the pic, should return after pressing on it, as for removal I have never tried. I do know however if the top one gets stuck in it is very ******* hard to start if it does at all.

The only one I have floating about at the moment has a busted primer bulb, nothing already pulled apart to try and pull the balls out of.

No good. It fires and runs for 10 seconds then dies. Won't prime up unless i put my hand over the fuel cap either. Might be time to look for another carby!
