Decided to grab this one although i have this model, gave it a quick clean, looks good, excellent base, compression good, but no windrower of course. Having a look over it the starter body is a more red colour but the handle is the same colour as the fuel tank etc and when I opened the handle the colour on the inside is identical to my other one. Embossed in the handle is sure start, map of Australia including tassie, and in the centre is a Micrometer. My other F61 has no such markings, none at all. Maybe the starter was rebuilt with the original winder handle re installed ?
That one is in great condition, yes I would say that the handle has been replaced at some point. Really like seeing the decals still present, especially the air filter one. Looks like it has spent its storage life indoors.
It was pulled out from under a house to be demolished, fortunately one of the demo guys doing some preliminary works put it in the back of his ute before the heavy artillery arrived. Getting back to the starter, do you think its origin is more Victa ? any idea of the map of Australia with micrometer in centre logo origin ? Both of this model I have don't have Turner on the front of the deck but some images of the same deck do have it on. Mine look like there is an area on the front of the deck which possibly may have been for a name sticker, but I've never seen an image of one. Two decks made for the F61 model I presume.
Not a bad F61 you have there , from what I have seen the F61 doesn't have the Turner casting on the front of the base, the F62 has the Turner casting, it's easy for people to mix them up and go by wrong newspaper ads ,always a few anomalies in newspapers .
I don't think the starter with the Aus map is a Victa starter ,I have one or two of the same starters on 4BIM Turner mowers.
Below is an example of the new F61 in 1961 and it's missing the Turner Name on the front of the deck.
The image below (F61) doesn't clearly show it the starter has the map stamping.

Correct; the micrometer logo was a trademark of James N Kirby Pty Ltd; specifically for petrol engines, among other items [under several different Oz trademark numbers; the earliest were registered in 1957]. https://search.ipaustralia.gov.au/trademarks/search/view/252307
That's brilliant Gadge ! It's nice to have something a bit different, they obviously didn't apply the stamping to all starters.
That's interesting that you have the same logo on the 4BIM starter, mine is missing the starter which is a 3 post mount from memory as opposed to the 4 on the F61

The 3 post top will fit the 3 post recoil starter or the 4 post impulse starter, when the impulse starter is used an alloy adaptor is used.
Hi Jack, As a kid I remember following the Redex trial and thinking what amazing blokes they were to be able to be able to keep their cars going through all the outback, and the stories being told about how Jack kept throwing sticks of gelignite at the other competitors if they tried to pass him
I don't have a spare starter/spacer WCE, I only have a couple of that type that are on complete mowers.
Thanks Jack for the additional Kirby info. ,I wasn't aware Kirby was the technical director of Champion spark plugs Co. or that they sold reco engines for motor vehicles.
I'd think that Kirby, Doutty & Wicks was a subsidiary of James N Kirby Pty Ltd - note the line 'A Unit of the James N Kirby Organisation'. James N Kirby was a very diversified company, with quite a few 'operating divisions'.
