Thanks for the welcome Jack, and for pointing me in the right direction.

The parts diagram you've posted is what has come up in all my searches which shows 2 drive chains, the machine I'm working with only has one chain with the small sprocket attached to the drive shaft (item No#. 7) going directly to the axle assembly (item No#. 60) The extra gear reduction of the Idler assembly (item No#. 16)has me worried if I order those parts my final drive could be way off.

You did however lead me to this post on the forum which appears to show part the correct model diagram. A part No#. for item 11 from that schematic (or tooth count) would be very helpful.

The Ranger Autodrive's drive mechanism is conceptually the same as the Greenfield system - I think it is found on some other machines too. It relies on a ballrace thrust bearing in between the forward and reverse clutches. Here is part of the Illustrated Parts List for the 01866 Autodrive:

Item 8 is the thrust bearing.

Obviously I do not know whether your particular mower has been correctly assembled, but this is the way it is supposed to be.
