You got me thinking about the brazing idea. A bit of research shows there are some products that claim to be able to do this. The instructions that I was looking at actually mentions lawnmower repairs to aluminium.

Aluminium Repairs It's worth a try and if it does work I'll let you know here. Might take a few weeks to get here as it's coming from USA. Has anybody tried this stuff or anything like it?
