The design of the bottom end of the connecting rod certainly doesn't look like something Atom would have made for themselves, Joe. I can't say I like the little cantilevered crank, but it did give them room for a really neat little reed valve setup. I don't have any Ryobi bits to repair the edger with. However I can tie the leg, handles etc. into a bundle and see if it will fit onto the return load when Ty and Jeffery are in Melbourne at the end of the month. Ty, you have about a hundred Ryobi whipper snippers in stock, as I recall. Is this of any use to you? I can easily grab it back out of the trash and bundle it up.
