Bradley,
Yes it does sound like you have an air leak. I need you to answer a couple more questions.
1. Have you had the starter off?
2. Have you had the carby off and dismantled?
3. Are you getting any noises comming from the cylinder head area?
4. If you hold the blade plate do you get any movement side to side?
5. Remove muffler and check the piston to see if you have any marks on it.
