Hi, I just reconditioned one of those, and about all I can think of is that if the engine drive pulley isn't in the same plane as the other pulleys, then it will throw the belt off. It's the only pulley that the position can be altered on. It wouldn't have to be far out. Failing that, check to see that the clutch mounts aren't bent.
