Wow, he really didn't want that clutch to slip! I have a spare lever, it is the same as mine and i think ivye seen it on these early ones.
The steering is a fairly easy fix, front axle should have some stoppers that come down and catch the tie rod end before it goes too far. A lot of people cut these off to get some more steering but as in your case it can go backwards and lock everything up.
