Hi guys, brand new to this forum and struggling a bit with posting pictures etc. Anyhoo, new project, restore old junker ride on. I am trying to find out what model number this machine might be, I am not even sure of the vintage. It will hopefully be less of a battle chasing spare parts if I have a vague idea of what I am talking about.

Welcome to Outdoorking, LonelyinMoe.

That seems to be an HD-8, which I think was the first model Greenfield. It is probably something of a collector's item now. Is the Honda a G65?

This thread will give you quite a bit of information about it:

Thanks Grumpy, yep it is a Honda G65.
I also apologise for posting into the wrong forum, damn newbies!!

Had a read of the link, Grumpy (that was a two can read).
Did the guy from the UK (Rong) ever post the information that Greenfields sent him?

No, Rong hasn't visited this site since October 2012. That thread contains the only posts he ever made.

By the way, I've moved the topic - thanks for prompting me.

The thread is now in Ride On Mowers and Tractors.

I must be a complete computer spastic. The only forums I see are "ride on" and "ride-on mowers", no "ride on mowers and tractors"

The larger and more capable ride-ons are called Lawn Tractors if they are light duty, and Garden Tractors if they are slightly heavier-duty. There are miniature farm-type accessories available, though they tend to be somewhat ornamental compared with what you can do with a rake and a shovel. In the case of Garden Tractors, there may even be cute little ground-engaging implements such as harrows etc. A lot of damage is done to ride-on transmissions by people who attempt to use that stuff, but they often have a whole lot of fun, sort of like an adult version of a kid playing with a train set. No doubt our partners would call them "boys' toys".

If you look at the very top of this page LiM you can see the chain of forum subsets that your post is in. What is that very dusty vehicle in the background?

The dusty car Aussietrev is my wife's corvette. I don't think it has seen bitumen for about 5 or 6 years.

Yes, it's an HD-8, late series [the early series had a different front axle mount]. This pic of a member's HD-8 collection shows that difference; the red painted ones are the early series.

Is that Rodeobob's collection of HD-8s? We heard he'd put it up for sale a few weeks ago, I don't know the outcome.

Yes, I saved a couple of the pics from his ad at the time, for reference. Don't know the outcome, either.

I know the outcome, they are the mowers that I bought. Small world I guess.

So you have four HD-8s, not just one? I'm guessing you have most of the parts to get one into really good shape, and have a life-time supply of most spares for it. You'll probably be swamped by people who want to buy odd bits from you, too. If you handle things well, you may be able to do swaps, for bits you need yourself.

Thanks for letting us know where Bob's HD-8s went - now we don't have to wonder any more, and people looking for spares will know who to negotiate with.

yeah, most parts Grumpy, still need a cutting deck and the "disposables"..... clutches, drive belts etc. I did find a HD8 parts list catalogue on your website, which could prove invaluable in getting the correct parts. I can keep you posted on the progress if you are interested.

A thread on the restoration or rebuild, whichever you do, would be very interesting to a lot of people I think, including me. You could continue this thread or start a new one - your choice.

Update if interested. Motor number one was a smoke free runner. In keeping with my policy of "if it aint broke, don't fix it", motor was just pulled down, sand blasted and repainted with new plug and pull start.

Frame was re-welded in a few places where there were signs of metal fatigue, then sandblasted and put into primer. [Linked Image]
Bit disappointed with Greenfields though. I emailed them a week ago regarding ordering some spare parts... no reply.

I'm not totally comfortable about sandblasting and paint-dipping the rear axle bearings, but it's your choice of course: worst case, new bearings after a while. Did you have any problems getting the rust out of the crevices around the welds in the frame parts?

This job should come up well - I'm looking forward to further installments. Meanwhile, other people have also said that emailing Greenfield's service department about vintage mowers doesn't seem to be the best way to get a fast response, but people who have telephoned have usually been quite pleased with the service. As you will have learned from Rong's thread, though, Greenfield have not retained records from the HD-8 days and therefore cannot be of much help to you anyway.

Did you actually need a new starter on the engine? Because it looks like a genuine Honda engine, I'm surprised that you needed a new one. I hope you got a genuine replacement: chonda starters are usually not one of their best features.
