Hi all, I have recently inherited my grandfathers Model 33 which had been sitting unused for more than 30 years. I have been able to get the Kirby HK25 engine running with some tlc so now my attention has turned to the mower itself. It's in fair condition and I would like to undertake a full restoration in the future but for now I am just trying to get it running smoothly.
My main question is regarding a 20mm chip in the centre of the reel. Do you think this is something that I need to repair or if I get the blades sharpened will the engineer just ignore this? Or is the whole blade stuffed?

Thanks

Hi Bren40.

Gee, that chip looks a bit nasty, doesn’t it. The guy I take my cylinders to often replaces those single pieces by taking that whole spiral out and welding a new one in. Once it’s out on the grinder, enough material can be taken off to have it match the others. I’m sure there is someone else who may have another option, but I’m fairly sure he charges about $50-$80 to repair reels on top of the normal sharpening charge. You certainly don’t want to be up for a new reel ($400-$500) 😳

I would suggest you call around locally and get some quotes to repair it.

G'day Bren40,

I'm no expert, but what em says is what I was thinking too. I certainly wouldn't run it as is.

Your 33 looks like it is in similar condition to my 45 when I got it. Certainly doable.

I don't collect mowers. I just require Multiple Mowing Solutionsâ„¢.
