So I managed to get everything pulled apart today. Pic below...
Only question now is: Will I be able to put it all back together again lol!
At this stage its really just the clutch cork and thrust bearing that need to be replaced, everything else is dirty but sound. One bolt holding the front roller on got chewed up in the tear down, but that's fairly minor and easily resovled.
Next steps are to de-grease and wire brush all the yucky stuff and work on prepping the chassis and other parts for painting.
Probably going to take several weeks now as this is all the painstaking stuff.
All that's going through my mind is that my Pappa (Grandfather) would probably think i'm nuts for going to this extreme, but I think it will be worth it in the end... hopefully lol!
Are you sure that the cork requires replacement as it as if there's still thickness there then all it needs is to be cleaned with a solvent to remove the grease out of it. Those thrust bearings have always been noisy units as they are not precision bearings like automotive wheel bearings. These can generally be cleaned out and have lubricant re-injected and last another 20 years of service.
I seem to find that there's a fair bit of snake oil based around replacement of SB parts with no real benefit apart from emptying ones pocket.

On the thrust bearing, will definitely clean it up and re grease. It's very good to know that they are meant to be noisy.
I would love a hand when it comes time to reassemble. You'd be more than welcome to come round and offer a hand at some point, perhaps once I have painted all that needs painting in a few weeks time.
