Hey all,

Just about to put my SB45 all back together after stripping down , painting and new bearings etc.

Wondering if you pack the bearings with grease ? If so what are you using ?

Since I have never put my hands on one these mowers it would question for those that do. I do know it would depends which bearing are referring to so you may need to add that info.

I also what comes in sealed bearing out China is basically a poor grade of grease in cheap bearing. On these I repack with a good hi temp Moly grease.

Usually the only bearings that are not sealed are the Primary Clutch thrust bearing and the PTO shaft unit.

If you purchased the self-aligning version (1202 I believe) of the PTO shaft, you would pack this bearing with grease prior to fitting. Once fitted, it should have a rubber washer/shield up against the chassis and then the v seal on the other side of the housing. A lot of people go with a 6202 sealed bearing when they replace, but if yours was a 1202 originally, I would be replacing it with the same.

The 6202 was merely another one of those cost cutting ventures that Rover were so into as they didn't expect a machine to last past 10 years before one would replace it with a new unit.

As far as eliminating vibrations due to very slight variations in chassis twist and wear of componentry etc.over the years I would definitely stay with the 1202.

The 1202 can not be obtained in a sealed version due to it's axial movement of the inner race and thus it's simply a matter of keeping it well packed in grease. Sadly doing this is not easy as it's a engine removal job to gain access, as the whole drive line across the top needs to be moved across so that the housing is able to be removed, thus why most machines have never had that particular bearing lubricated in the whole life of the mower.

Costing on the 1202 can be anywhere between $19 and $35 depending on where it is purchased from and what brand it is. There's not that much choice out there. I've just placed an order for one at trade price and it's also a Japanese made unit for my neighbours 45 that I'm currently building.

Just a thought on that self aligning bearing, I know I asked you before about the little hole on the bearing mount cover but would taping and installing a grease nipple do the trick to squeeze some grease inside.

Certainly wouldn't hurt but keeping in mind that it is not a sealed compartment as the chaincase side is somewhat open even though there's that rubber seal in there but the grease will find the easy way out and that will be all out through the shaft opening.
