Found this Masport on side of road, but it was missing the pulls start cord, and the throttle cable. Comes with allow base.
I replaced the pull cable, though it's shorter than it should be. I wound the recoil spring as far as I could so I could use a good length of cord, but im about 30cm short, so I have to be careful pulling it.
Other than that, it seemed to start fine, runs a little average, needs a carb clean.
Main issue is the base height adjustment. I have to keep it at the max height (last 3 slots), any lower and it starts cutting into the dirt. Not sure why this is, perhaps it's not the correct base, or poor design ? The other issue is, using the mower, the height adjustment lever constantly pops out of the selected height and the mower drop in height . Because of this, I cracked the sh*ts and kicked the mower, resulting in a busted wheel (oops).
Anyone know much about this mower, or know an alternative mower base this engine might fit on? I have a couple of spare Victa alloy bases, probably from the 70/80s sitting here, not sure if it's bolt in OK, or whether the base is too shallow for the cut?Only other option is to try replace the front axle with a spare from another mower... whether it's fit or not, unknown.. or I try fit different front wheels.
[EDIT] Anyone know why images won't show in full, only as a link?

I have had to weld a small block of steel to some part, can't remember exactly so that it put more pressure on the adjuster spring and that solved the problem with it dropping down, that was on a Honda but pretty much the same setup. As for cutting too low check that the blade carrier is up inside the body and if this is ok then it must be a problem with the height adjuster arm to the front wheels or the front axle bushes have worn out or disappeared
Thanks Norm, Ill check out the underside and the height adjustment, though Im not sure what you mean by having a lend of us ? When I found the mower, it had a rope tied to the lever... now I think I know why.
@Blended, how did you get the pictures to show up ?
@carby, yeh, got frustrated and gave it a couple boots. It's pretty much just the front-right wheel that's buggered, everything else should be right. The red plastic on top I think might have already been broken, or loose, but some plastic glue might be in order.

Widget, you are wondering why it might be cutting low, no bushes on the front axle and it was being held on with cable ties, this might be a good starting point with the problems of the height

Hey Bruce!
I use both Imgur and the attachment manager on my posts as i like lots of big clear pics :-D
The pics i posted here were on Widget's Imgur account, i just helped him get them seen on his post.
Hey Widget!
I'd flip it over for a closer look mate, the cable ties present in the pics (as Norm has mentioned) may be a clue to why your tearing up the green stuff.
Whilst not a write off, the poor gal has seen better days.
Looks like an interesting project,,, a bit of trial and error..... you can cut bases, drill holes, put spacers in to raise motor, or use a 3lb sledge hammer to lower the base holes to make it work.... I did that once, it's on ODK somewhere... As long as you can get it going to mow the lawn...... cheers speedy

Thanks Bruce :), I'll give that a shot.

Thanks Norm. I took some more pics of the front axle, not sure what I'm missing . Despite the cable ties, it looks right (attached pics)

I attached some underside pics from the front axle... looks sort of ok to me... I might have to go detective mode and try find some reference material on how it looks and how it should operate.
Something that doesn't look right is the height adjuster bar where it comes down onto the front axle, it looks to be too steep and this will drop the front down. It looks nearly vertical when I think it should be about 45 degrees. Just the fact that by kicking it you were able to bend the axle arm on the right hand side sort of indicates the steel used is a bit on the flimsy side, so the adjuster may just have bent if the front wheel had hit something hard

I had another look, though it didn't seem bent. Ill have another look tomorrow in the daylight, but looking at it, it seemed normal. I took some more photos, the height adjust bar does have a couple of slight sideways bends to it, though don't know whether that would affect the height adjustment or not.
Most of the pics, the height adjust bar looks bent upwards, but I think that's just the camera angle. There's a pic attached that's a direct sideview to show the angle of the bar.
Some pics the height adjuster bar looks very bent and in others not too bad, but regardless that is where the problem is, bent bar, missing bushes or excessive wear in the adjuster bar holes

I might strip it down, bend back into shape. Any idea where to get a diagram of how it suppose to be and what parts are meant to be there ?
No idea where you would get any info on it Widget, you just have to make it work by whatever means you have available and I don't mean cable ties but if that rocks your boat then that is ok by me. For bushes you can try a piece of garden hose, split it down the middle so it can go over the axle. As for the height adjuster bar, once you have the front axle secured in place, set the deck so it is sitting fairly level and then bend the bar so that it fits in the front and rear pivot points. You need to set the base with at least the right hand wheel touching the ground, left hand wheel is off so you can work on the bar. Probably will need the left rear off as well so you can remove and refit the bar as you test fit it
