Hello ODK History Lovers

The 16” Model 22 Spin-Cut was Scott Bonnar’s first domestic
rotary lawnmower. Introduced in late 1956, it would introduce
this great SA company to the emerging rotary revolution.

This machine was no ‘toe-cutter’ – but a fully skirted design (alloy)
with a side discharge port. With a heavy blade holder and three
reversible flat blades, that were ‘pitched’. This would have been
an efficient grass cutter.

The height adjustment was primitive, with multi point single wheel
adjustment (six staggered settings). The steel hub wheels had
‘oilite’ bushings and rubber tyres.

One interesting feature of the JAP engine was the addition of an
extra ball-bearing on the lower crankshaft – making this a three-
bearing job. I do not know whether this was a JAP or SB modification
to the C80 engine. Also note an early example of a snorkel air cleaner.

Also note the brochure’s addressing safety! The skirted base
had an ‘extended front and rear body casing’ for foot safety.
Yes, the Model 22 also had a ‘floating’ handle …

At this time Scott Bonnar had factory offices in NSW, VIC, SA, QLD
and TAS. It had a Distributor in WA and had distributors in New
Zealand
and South Africa.

Most of all, Scott Bonnar proclaimed at this time that they were,
“The largest organisation in the Commonwealth specialising in grass-cutting equipment.”

What a bold claim …. but … TRUE!

TO BE CONTINUED …

PART TWO – The Brochure
This Model 22 Spin-Cut brochure is from my collection and
is in very good condition. Like other Scott Bonnar model
brochures of the day, this is a small bi-fold, measuring
approx. 20cm x 13cm (folded).

This brochure is probably the original – and only – brochure printed
for the Model 22. Of particular note is the ‘geo-spiral’ design of the
covers. Brilliant!

As always, I make this brochure available for viewing or as a higher
resolution download for personal use. Enjoy!
