I bought one of these motors some years ago and I couldn't see how the bolt pattern could be Briggs/Honda as claimed but I just ended up drilling holes to suit. I see the seller still claims they are Briggs pattern but I fail to see that it is. I have contacted them and asked for the measurement of the 2 bolt holes on the crank end of the base plate. They say it is 200mm, and I believe after recent discussions on here that the Briggs is 179mm. I don't think they even match push mower pattern. I can't answer if it a Briggs pattern or not but I try to find that blown up 09P engine here tomorrow and compare to what I posted above. I also have the mower deck that the 09P was on that I can measure too; just got a road trip in the morning. I am fairly confident it will match up. It just that Briggs haven't publish an bolt pattern image of the 09P that I can find here to easily compare to. Right now all I can say is it is a 8 in (203mm) bolt circle.
Don't stress about it too much AVB, are you saying that there is a third Briggs pattern in their motors? It looks like the ride on bolt pattern goes from 8hp, might even go down to 5 hp up to 20 hp and then the push mower is different using 3 bolts and have we another one in the middle this 09P you mention?
I think there is only generally two Briggs patterns. One for push mower engine and one for the larger riders. I compared the 09P OHV to a 122M L-head (side valve) and both of their three patterns match each other on a 8" circle. But don't appear to match the HF Pedator engine that I posted a diagram of.
NormK try to get vendor send you measurement diagram like the one I posted so you can compare. I don't think it even come close without drilling new mounting holes.
I have asked the vendor AVB, but I am not expecting a reply as I have questioned the measurements from them and they are not that forthcoming with info on it even though they state it is Briggs pattern in the ad. What is this 09P are they a manufacturer of small engines? So do you have any idea what the HF Predator motor fits?
The 09P is the one with the plastic carburetor and if I'm not the 08P uses the same type of carburetor. It basically a ground up Briggs designed much the new 12V300 series that Briggs has come out with.
I probably go and buy the Predator engine Sunday my area. I got a 20% off coupon so it will be $100 without taxes then i will know for sure if it fits the Briggs 8" circle as I got new mower body sitting in the shop where the customer threw a rod in the 09P because they because they didn't put oil in it.

AVB, don't go out and get the Predator just so you can check it. The Predator must be made for some mower and as far as I have come across out here they are all Briggs pattern except for the Victa Powertorque which is a similar PCD but different spacing. What Victa did was many of their bases were drilled both patterns so they could fit the Briggs or the PT depending on what they were building at the time I would be very surprised if the 09P being Briggs was not the standard Briggs bolt pattern, this Predator seems the odd ball one.
The 09P is the same as the other 6 hp Briggs I have here so it is cleared up. On the Predator I do need to know about it anyways as customers are wanting me to install the cheap engine on their mowers. It might be just a optics problem for me or the engine must rotate off from the normal Briggs orientation. Anyway it shouldn't be a problem to sell the engine this Summer. It looks like Spring weather is early this year. Fruit trees are already budding.
That is good to know AVB, and also about spring as long as you are ready for it, out here it just goes crazy in the first couple of weeks of spring. Rotating the motor is not an option, redrilling is the only way of solving it. Not the end of the world but why can't they be built correctly as they claim to be.
Yesterday it was 70F and this morning is a damp 35F. Might get to 50 with cold rain.
Yes the Spring in my area is nutsy too. Right now we in what I call yo-yo weather. One it might in the 60-70F and the next down 20-30F very hard to get used to. And later in March-May it is stormy with tornadoes at anytime during the storms. This weather pattern is getting worse every year too.
As engines it sure would help with even Briggs if the replacement matches the one it replaces. Especially those recoils position since they want to weld them in place. I did a log splitter back in the Fall that had to rotate the engine 90 degree CW so the operator would not be busting his hands on the splitter. It required drilling new mounting holes and now he will need to buy a oil extractor or bring the unit in for me to do it as there is no way to get to the engine's drain plug. This was the only option we had on a 20 yrs old unit. Yet another one I had to shorten the crankshaft to mount the hydraulic pump. Then there is times when the crankshaft is too short then the only is to buy a new machine.
This is a different motor but I assume the bolt patterns are the same. I think I will have to draw it up to scale and see if there is any way this can be a Briggs pattern, be it ride on or push motor
Norm I got a good look at the Predator engine. I decide to forego the expense of buying it as doesn't look like it will fit a Briggs pattern. I would slip the crankcase cover I had with me but they had the engine bolted down.
AVB, if they don't fit Briggs then what are they used for, being a vertical shaft motor there is a not of other uses for them. It is just that I get a bit annoyed when a vendor is selling them claiming they are a Briggs/Honda pattern and when I ask questions they don't reply
they can work on the push mowers just got to drill new mounting holes. what got me not to buy it was how cheap it looked for the throttle setup.
as for things being as compatible or oem spec'd it is a problem that i am running into lately here too. i threw out about 1000 usd in v-belts last June because they didn't match the specs they labelled as.
Well if that is the case, why do they bother drilling any holes if there is nothing they match up to, why not leave it as a blank disc and say drill your own holes, doesn't make any sense?
AVB, most push mowers out here you can't drill new holes in the body, because the bolt holes are on raised sections, if you drill new holes you would have to make up spacers. This is the case at least for all the alloy base mowers, some of the steel ones would possibly work
