Hello fellow enthusiasts.
Have recently picked up a rusty looking old villager
mower.
Have taken the bottom nut off the crankshaft ?
Do not know how to remove the blade disc from shaft
Would appreciate some advice.
Hopefully some pics showing my problem.

Hi Phil,

it should come straight off from there, nothing else left to hold it on. The disc may have turned a fraction on the shaft, if there is a flat on the shaft it may just be stuck.

Me being an absolute beginner,it appears to have
a nut ? Dimensions 1 1/4 inch across joined attached on the backt of the disc surrounding the shaft, only just visible on photo.

Hi Phil,
Have you tried putting some rope down the plug hole to stop the engine rotating and then turning the hole disc. I think that nut is attached to the back of the disc but I can�t quite remember.

Have tried with rope,then took off the head,inserted a piece of wood but still no luck.
Have read of others having similar stuck,frozen, rusted, seized things, have been putting penetrene
on as best I can

Hi Phil,

I will have a look at my Villager for you tomorrow, I have had the blade plate off before and remember that it was a pain. Check the nut under the plate for a lock washer that may have bent over tabs to secure the nut.

Hi Phil, looks to me like you will have to put a big spanner on that nut and give it a hit with a big hammer or mallet. I would say the large hex piece is welded to the blade plate. If you have some heat get it nice and hot as well.

And if you have no joy with it Phil, you can bring it to my place, I can weld a piece of pipe on it and then I can get the rattle gun to get it off. Once off we can just cut the pipe off

Did try that but was worried about doing damage to the piece and or my self,
so was probably only half of what might be needed.

You were right with your very first comment,
it should come straight off,and it did,after hitting it with penetrene a number of times, still not moving.
Norm offered to help and would you believe placing
the base on his work bench the blade disc just fell off.
Unbelievable it was,no thread on inside of hex nut at all

And Paul, just as a bit of an update on the blade carrier, as suspected it wasn't a factory weld on the nut, thread had been drilled out and a little trail of weld had been put inside the nut as a sort of key. As you can see in one of the picks the crank had a flat on one side and the bit of weld prevented the disc from turning on the shaft

Then Norm I would suspect the carrier shifted and wedge that homemade key and the trip with the carrier unbolted jarred it loose. Even regular keyed flywheels can get stuck when the keys get sheared. I have a few that have been a real pain to remove because of this.

In the case of the carrier I suspect they used a D shape ID of mounting hole and it sounds like some time in past the area got sheared and someone weld on a standard hex shaped nut and ground out the threading.

Of course we all find things like this when DIYers are involved in repairs.

AVB, one thing I didn't take note of was what the nut came up against to prevent it going right up to the underside of the seal, the fact the disc just fell off sort of threw me

Hello All,

That�s a great outcome, mine had a tab washer under the nut to stop it coming loose. Might be a good idea to make one up. If you replace the blades and bolts let me know what you find that fits as I have a few villagers that need blades.
