Hello follow members, I have come across an old hurricane engine I'm after any information.
D58. 38a (unable to upload photo at this stage). IT knowledge less than mechanical knowledge.

Also is a Torque Wrench usually used for the tightening of the head bolts on old Victa Motors, if so what poundage.

Regards

Hi Phil, you can use a torque wrench , 12/14 foot pounds should hold it ok . I was given an old Hurricane about 1972 and I used it on my lawns for over 20 years, absolutely fantastic motor. I think I still have the carby off it here somewhere, poor old motor just wore completely and I think it went to the scrap

Thank you Norm, unable to put photo on at this moment but the spark plug on the hurricane engine is facing downward, does that seem right.

Hello Phil and Norm
Many thanks for Norm's expert advice. smile

We really do need an image here.

Hurricanes, like Victas, were made for horizontal and vertical configurations.
It was easy to swap the spark plug direction, depending on application.

It may help to type 'Hurricane' in the Search 'blue bar' (above).

Hope this helps.

One problem with the Hurricane is that it doesn't have removable head, barrel/head all one piece. Only thing you could do is remove the barrel so you can rotate it, not the best solution but as it is probably not going to see a lot of work again. If I was doing this I would give the bore a hone and fit new rings.

G;day Norm,
For the record, Hurricane did make removable heads
on some models.

Here is a dated record from the Vintage Mowers website ...
I accessed these pages in 2013.

Also, I include an auction image of an alloy head Hurricane and
Hurricane documents,

Cheers

Hi Jack, thats right I remember seeing them now, I was going off my experience with the one I had and that was all in one, I guess they realized the barrel was easier to machine if it had a straight through bore. I was guessing that the one Phil was probably without a head otherwise he would have turned the head 180 degrees and that would have solved his problem.

Hi Norm
Yep, the detachable head is far less common on Hurricanes.

For me, the interesting thing is that Hurricane started as an engine maker
and later made lawnmowers. The opposite to Victa.
