I have a Victa Tornado 2 stroke for fixing. The owner said there was a terrible racket for awhile but then it cleared up and he continued mowing until the mower died of over heating. It was actually "hissing" with heat stress. Well compression seems good with the finger over hole test so I am hoping the engine is not damaged. However, the flywheel has lost all it's fins. I guess that was the racket he heard and the reason for the subsequent overheating.

I have another good 2 stroke engine but it is the short shaft and won't fit the tornado, although I could just take the flywheel off it. However, I'd rather keep that engine together.

So, does anybody have a flywheel for sale? This one has the number MA05690A but I think any late model two stroke one would do.

That off a power torque at bottom of engine? Hard to tell from the pic. I have a couple of PT engines sitting in my yard but I'm in NSW.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Normal PT wheel should be fine, what I would like to know is what broke the fins off the original, had the bottom cover plate been removed?

Yes Mowerfreak. Powertorque bottom of engine. Sorry aboput the picture. I might do a better one for posterity. Norm, I don't know what caused it and that's a bit of a worry. the person I got it of did not know that the flywheel was damaged and thought it was engine noise. Could a stone or something get in there while the mower was spinning and do that?

That is big damage and you didn't find anything in there? The only way for something to get in there is down from the top and I can't see how anything big enough could get in there. Was the plastic shield around the body in place?

Most logical answer is that someone tried to hold the crank still by jamming a bar in the fan blades......

DB that is the most likely cause but that is not the way the owner claimed it happened

The plastic shield was there when I got the mower. Could the magneto have slipped into the flywheel path? The magneto wasn't working when I got the mower but I didn't see any damage to it. On second thought that is unlikely since it was fixed in place properly.

Sparker, before you go too far with this one, remove the pull starter and look inside to see if there is any signs of metal flakes or anything else because this motor has been hot for some reason and the few missing blades would not be the cause of that. Getting hot and hissing could mean it was run on straight petrol

Now they don't do that on your side of the rock too? It is the number 2 cause of the 2 cycle death here; of course, carburetor problems are still the number 1 thing to repair here but not by much.

Trust me AVB it happens out here as well and probably everywhere else in the world where 2 strokes are involved

Even I did it once to a power torque and only realised when the engine stalled abruptly. It still worked fine after I put in the right fuel, but the bore and piston must be scored.

I think I'll pass on this one. I found another Tornado with a Briggs engine on a rusted frame so I will swap them over.
