I need to build up a 30mm shaft that is worn by .2mm. I'm thinking of using JB Weld on it and then turn it down to suit the bearing. Has anybody done this, my other alternative is to run a thin bead of weld around it but I'm not happy doing that because it may have a detrimental effect on the composition of shaft. Any thoughts and I don't think I could speedie sleve it

Personally I never had any good with JB weld on anything other than no stress items. I see way this going to work since it a lot weaker than the metal that has already been worn. I even tried a product by Prematex call Steel Weld epoxy with terrible threading results. It would have never held mounting blade spindle.
If you can't get a replacement shaft then welding would the best option in my opinion; just make sure to center the journal on the shaft for balance.
Question though as why journal is worn so far in the place. Was it one those journals the roller bearing fitted on loosely? If so then the new shaft would do it again; unless, the journal is knurled so bearing has slight press fit. If is instead a bushing type bearing then the journal area need to near perfect smooth to prevent wear.

Thanks AVB what I thought, didn't think it would work but always pays to ask. I think I will go with the weld but I might just put a small spot of weld in 6 spots, this saves the ring effect of a weld all the way around, then I can turn it back to suit the bearing. It is just a roller bearing so it should be fine.

I tried JB Weld to build up a shaft one time. It was a failure. It is great stuff for repairing fins and patching holes etc., but not much good where any kind of stresses or movement occurs. The only other solution might be to sleeve it.

Still working on it I have to make up a mount so that I can mount my grinder to the lathe to finish it off but it all takes time and lots of other things keep getting in the way. Hopefully I will get back to it before I get too much older
