Hi Everyone, My newly acquired Supercut, possibly will be in need of an engine swap. The Villiers 2stroke, doesnt seem to want to run.... I havent given up hope just yet, but i would like to arm myself with some options if the Villiers is to be retired.
Has any one had experience in retrofitting a later 4 stroke engine, EG briggs 3.5hp 550 Series?
Hello Aiden This is the bigger Villiers Mk25C 2-stroke. Bits are still available.
An engine swap would be the last thing to do - for the simple reason that the engine mounts are unique to this engine. You would need to modify the base mounts to accommodate a modern 4-stroke.
A 4-stroke will not bolt on; neither will any other 2-stroke in any simple way. It would be a shame to lose that connection - between mower and original engine. That is a personal view.
If you know engine theory, and the engine has compression and spark, then the fuel mix must be fresh. It is possible that the engine is miss-timed.

You could do an engine swap but you can only use an engine that has a 5/8 PTO shaft coming out of the crankcase. The bigger Honda's and Chonda's have all got 3/4 inch (19mm) PTO shafts which is too big to suit the counter weighted sprocket.

Yeah the Villiers are a pretty hardy engine, not much to go wrong. I'd be checking the usuals first New spark plug Confirm coil is in good shape New fuel Carby is clean/ operating
With the original engine up and running it is a far more interesting machine with than one with a modern chonda motor fitted, it looses all its heritage then.
Couldn't agree more with you Norm, thus why I originally suggested in a PM to Aiden that it should only require a fuel system service as it has both spark and compression and with it being a 2 stroke it will probably require a full chemical cleaning of residual 2 stroke oil that has congealed in the carburetor, thus blocking the supply of fuel.
