Hello ODK Collectors
It was a rewarding moment when Kye Turnbull of Vintage Mowers: Buy, Swap and Sell sent me
the first image of a KBC lawnmower. I had been chasing that one for years, but with no luck
[see Related Reading].

K.B.C. (Ken Bowes and Company) of Adelaide made a significant contribution to post war
Australian industry; particularly with their household appliances: electric drills, electric kitchen
mixes, and their older manual products - their bean slicer and Fruit Juice Extractor.

Many thanks to Administrator Deejay for spotting this one on an auction site. The postage
to me was dearer than the purchase price. Thanks Australia Post!

The KBC Juicer dates c1949 and probably staid in production for about 5 years.

PART TWO - The KBC Juice Extractor
I would have to say that my KBC juicer is in good original condition, retaining most of
the original paint ... a nice cream colour.

Made with about a dozen separate parts, the body and press arm are in cast aluminium,
the pulp collector and pivot arm in stainless steel. There are rubber foot mounts.
This was a table-top mounted machine operated by hand.

What killed-off the manual KBC Juice Extractor?
Why, the advent of cheaper household electrical appliances.
KBC's own electric mix-master, for example, had its own juice extractor attachment!

1950s Australia was a time of growing prosperity and the appliance market took care
of that. Australian working-class households - for the first time - experienced new
powered gadgets - to make household chores more enjoyable. The powered
lawnmower, the electric shaver, hand drill, vacuum cleaner, floor polisher, transistor
radio, radiogram, TV, refrigerator, washer - and whatever ...
all became within reach and made available to working-class Australians.

The rest is history.
