I was given this one by a mate to help fund my time for the Victa restore project.
Runs well but the base plate has a problem.
It only had the centre bolt holding the plate on. Other 3 sheared off.
I think it needs the 3 for safety....... and support.
That round end should pull off, if only I had a sliding hammer, might have to make one. Then to get the broken bolts out.....

What about replacing the studs? Might be easier to knock them out whilst still on the shaft. Then you have to find matching studs. Maybe bolts and nuts of the right length from the hardware store will work.

sliding hammer didn't work, gave me a nasty blister.............
I'll try to unscrew the studs. Drill and use , is it easy out, I have one....
Just soaking it in WD40.

They can be an absolute pig to get off once they rust on, they are not so much for safety they are to stop the blade from spinning if it only had the centre bolt

Got one out with an easyout........ broke the easyout on the other and broke a drill on the other.
I'll try to get the them out, but I think it will be safe with centre bolt and one anchor bolt.........

I'm not convinced about that repair - that one outer bolt will be sufficient.

This was such a clever design - that solved a problem - blade holders
coming loose. My understanding is that the centre bolt's main function
is to keep the boss in place.

The outer bolts take the rotary loads of the blade-holder and thus prevent
the centre bolt from loosening.

The price of a new blade holder boss would have been a cheaper option. Using a slide hammer is one of the hardest (if it has been on the shaft for a long period of time) ways of getting a boss of the crankshaft.

Here is a simple fix for getting the boss off the crankshaft.


1. clean the crankshaft up to shinny
2. Then apply some WD40 to the clean shaft
3. Then get a socket that is larger diameter than the shaft and smaller than the boss
4. Drive the shaft to the engine casing
5. Then clean the shaft showing after pushing the boss down to the engine casing
6. Once you have done that the WD40 again and slide the boss off

If you follow this procedure in future you will be able to place the damaged boss into a vice and drill out the broken bolts or just replace the boss.

It should only take about five minutes or less to get boss off the shaft.

It worked , just had to sand end 1 inch of shaft as it was tight.
And needed the sliding hammer to finally get it off.
But I found another boss from a massport that had a Tecumseh motor.., had to use massport blade disk as the holes just missed. But all OK , mowed the lawn, now it's for sale ....

Hi Speedy, I can't understand why any manufacturer would make an identical boss but vary the hole centers, but they did

Probably quite common for component makers to supply a part with variances for different clients. It's only a matter of positioning of the holes on the same part, depending on the flywheel that will go onto it. There may be eight mower makers that use this particular piece, with no two precisely the same.
I thought this was a hovering mower until I saw the picture of the regular Flymo branded push mower with wheels!!!

Speedy do you try and get a mower to fix every time you need to cut the lawn?, ok during winter but at this time of the year it could get a little hectic trying to find mowers fast enough.

Sounds like he finds them, does them up as his pet project of the week, cuts his lawn to prove them, then moves them on. Process repeats.
Sounds fun to me if you can pull it off well.

I keep the nice powertorques and old Victas.... move the rest... if I can.
