Hey folks - just for the record that snorkel was in great condition. The ad was very very clear and any inspection welcome and encouraged. I agree prices are ridiculous at the moment but that's the way life works - for example: try getting tomatoes in Vic right now for less than $9kg. Doesn't matter - my wife still buys them!!! Grrrrr.

Im a 100% positive (feedback) seller and the buyer in this instance is a return 'customer' PLUS as it happens he had negotiated some other items into the total deal. So never assume stuff lads because it can make an ASS of U and ME. Im feeling and little defensive --- although i know no one really had a crack at me personally. yay

My first post! LOL.

Hi Norm,

That so and so in Adelaide that's a dealer of fine antiques as he puts himself. Everything he has is at least 50 to 75% over priced, but strangely enough he seems to find the twats that will pay his sort of money, just wish I could find them like he does.

Cheers,
BB.

Yer. A NIB example wouldn't even come close to that price.... frown

That wally is a garage saler and prices all his stuff so high it's embarrassing I feel. How some people live with themselves always makes me wonder.
This is the same guy that put up a Hot Rodded Model 17 Supercut for $5K and eventually got under 1K for it after about 15 eBay listings with it.

Cheers,
BB.

Aha. His strategy is to plant the seed of the item being worth so much by listing it at a price he knows nobody will ever pay and then reduces it to less than 1/2 price so people think they are getting a bargain but are, at best paying real value.

Hi MF,

That's not a strategy, rather it's just making a %$@# out of one's self

Unless you've got very deep pockets he don't want to talk to you and definitely not me that's for sure as I'm too tight for him.

Just say I'll give you the price you want if you throw in the box with it. That'll stump him!

Sorry, I only just got back to this thread.

Another case in point. Yesterday I got a rubber snorkel out of the shed that I had bought for about $40 inc. postage from some eBay seller a few months ago. It was advertized as "brand new". I could tell it wasn't full length when it arrived, but I was prepared to live with that. Finally got around to fitting it. As soon as I tried to gently push it on the carby end, guess what? It split in two. Then I fit the breather end. Same thing happened. I tried to cut the ends off neatly and it just crumbled.

I had my suspicions when the seller said he had "professionally cleaned it with rubber conditioner" prior to sending. My guess is he used something like Armor-All to make it look bright and shiny again. He had probably shortened it due to a previous failed attempt at fitting it, so he cut if off as neatly as he could and resold it. A few months sitting in the shed and the Armour-All has completely demolished the rubber. Seems you win some and lose some. frown

I purchased another one from a mower shop recently for around the same price. It is in near mint condition and at least hasn't been saturated with Armour-All. LOL!

Armour-All is deadly to rubber. About the only thing you can safely condition rubber with is pure Lanoline, and then you have the problem of making the dust stick to it. Also if you have mice in the shed they may find a Lanoline-soaked snorkel very tasty to chew on.

What people will do to extract cash. I'd bet if he hadn't done anything to it, you would probably have a working snorkel. Some people have to meddle.
So frustrating.

Yep, I am betting he purchased it for himself and ruined it with Armour-All before installing on a mower, damaged the end, cut it off, then resold it as "brand new" stock. Either that or a buyer has stuffed it up and then demanded a refund. In hindsight I should have pressed him on the issue of it being shortened. By the time I realized what was wrong with it, too much time had passed.

he's a pure opportunist and nothing more, he wastes peoples time along with his own playing with ridiculous prices.
I can bet he paid no more than $10 or $20 at a garage sale.

I used to get so frustrated going to garage sales.
You turn up early and the home owner would scold you for coming before the advertised opening time but if you didn't, chances are those dreaded dealers would clean the place of the good stuff and be left with crap.
The last straw was with this house who stipulated in their ad strictly not before 7am only to find out they had let people in well beforehand anyway.
They just shrugged their shoulders in a blase fashion when I asked what happened to their not opening before the advertised time. Maybe I should have reported them to consumer affairs.
I reckon the Australian public can be some of the most unscrupulous people out there when it comes to trading of used wares.
They expect top dollar for their used crap but want your stuff for next to nix.

Never been to a garage sale, never really had the time. My stock reply to people who want to try a low ball price on me, I just reply,"try the tip shop in Hallam Rd" they don't have a comeback from that, brings the conversation to a quick stop
