Not quite. Sir John Kerr was the Governor-General who sacked the Whitlam Govt in 1975.

Gough Whitlam said, in a speech he made from the steps of Old Parliament House, that Malcolm Fraser would be known henceforth as 'Kerr's Cur'...

Seems to me Mr Kerr was in the design department at Greenfield, the fact the other "Mr Kerr" was in the news around that time was coincidence

Many Thanks geenhorn! That's this little mystery cleared up!
Hello prd, greenhorn and all

I am surprised: a late 70's Greenfield 'Javelin'.
I cannot find any patent reference. That's odd...

This is an exciting find about an unknown Greenfield.

It's a Javelin with a Fuji Robin engine

They appeared in about 1971 with the Greenfield Drive

There was a Mk2 version with a steering wheel and gearbox

G'day again Lewis,

1971 is way earlier than I'd expected!

There is so much to learn about the history of Greenfield and it's products......

Hello Lewis
These are never-before-seen WWW images of the Javelin.
On behalf of ODK History I thank you for them.
I know some 'Greenies' are losing sleep with you posts! laugh

Many thanks for giving us a more complete record of the Great Greenfield.

Obviously this is the forerunner to the 5XL and the Stallion using the rear engine design which with each one I had the motor at the rear took some weight off the front steering

Yup! Too true Jack, us Greenies are just loving this stuff!

Once again, many thanks Lewis,

I find it curious that, broadly speaking, folks in this country always seemed to gravitate to a tractor style machine. The other 'small acreage' designs just never seemed to hit the mark with the punters- and not just a Greenfield phenomenon either. It seemed to be across all manufacturers.

I wonder why that was?

My absolute pleasure!

It's my belief that we were the first manufacturer in Australia and maybe the world, with a front engined tractor format

Hello Lewis
This is an important question for the record.

I have argued on these forums that the North Americans 'invented' the 'Garden Tractor' -
a smaller version of the Agricultural farm tractor. I think that's right.

But whilst farm tractors were using front mounted engines from the early 20th century,
It is not clear who made the first front mounted engine on a garden tractor.

It is my belief that Greenfield were the first AUS manufacturer to do so.
The only competition were Rover (rear mounted engine Ranger) and Cox (mid-mounted engine, Mowmobile)).

It is clear that Toro had a front-mounted engine on a garden tractor in the interwar years ...
but it had a sickle bar mower attachment - not a rotary action.

It is clear that the Cox and Rover were North American inspired.
The Greenfield appears as a unique design in having a garden tractor
appearance (with front engine) and with a rotary cutter deck.

An interesting question you ask here.
You've got us thinking ...

All the best.

The tractor design was more popular for sure
Not only did it look better in most eyes it was safer
It didn't rear up on hills and could turn
All the rear engined machines under steered prodigiously

We weighted the front ends of our rear engined machines to counteract the front end lightness

It was also 'common knowledge' way back then that women preferred rear engine mowers

You wouldn't be game to say that now!
