Morning Crumpet,
Beats the heck out of me! Is it yours?
I'm struggling to see how the drive works.......obviously a friction 'greenfield' style thing but the extra large pulley? And how is drive to the blades achieved?
Cheers,

Like like a troublesome mower to me. Those pulleys in that cavity look like something you would see in a Freddy film!
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

What I'm trying to figure out is how the heck you steer it with that handle? At first glance it looks like a Cox, very similar shape to an XL Scout but it may be a Frankenmower.

Cheers, I would imagine the extra pulley is actually the final drive to the wheels rather than the more common chain drive.

Hello Crumpet, prd and aussietrev I would love to identify this one - because of the use of a Greenfield-style drive.
I think the extra pulley could be the input from the PTO side of the engine. I think one can see the chain drive sprocket to the rear axle. This means that the other serpentine belt also powers the cutter deck. This is just a guess.
Cheers ---------------- Jack
p.s. I am not keen on the above-ground swimming pool seat.

Hi Jack, I did think of mentioning the seat but I figured that was the least of the issues

Evening all, Yup, suspect your right Jack. So the 'extra' large pulley is physically bolted to its nearest mate and then there is a seperate belt to give the contra-rotating effect on the other drive pulley?? And blade clutching and direction change on the blade belt? Crickey Moses! Cheers,

G'day gml,
Dunno,l just dunno, can't shake a feeling.....
Reckon the shape of the original seat underneath the namco chair is the folded sheet steel job greenfield used on the minis and tractor 5.

G'day folks, I'd say that one clue to its age is the horizontal shaft engine, even though that one doesn't look like it is the original.
Cheers, Gadge

I would be good if we could get a few more shots of it, in particular underneath to see what goes on in there. Almost looks like a factory/homebuilt machine, maybe some prototype that escaped, but the red/yellow under the seat indicates some type of rehash

Looks like a skillfully homemade mower to my eyes, using bits and pieces from other mowers... or maybe it was a prototype???

Okay, let's make this a bit more interesting. I've go a $10 scratch-it to the first person that takes the bet that says this thing is a Greenfield! Not because I'm particularly certain about this claim, I'm just trying to have a bit of fun The thing has a few Greenfield identifiers. Speculation is that it is an example of a predecessor to the xl5 from the mid seventies that suffered spectacular market failure. And one can imagine why in that I can't see it being much cheaper to build than a tractor model. Prototype? Maybe but if I'd designed the thing and chosen not to put it into production I'd part it out or hang onto it. Among the things that make me doubt my own claim is the lack of previous identification and that there are no patents related to it. There seem to be patents relating to pretty much everything else he designed. Game on? Cheers,

I have rebuilt an XL5 and a Stallion and although there is some very slight similarities with the XL5 too many bits are not. Only Greenfield indicators is the clutch pack and the yellow under red paint under the seat area. The clutch pack assembly is in a much lower position that the XL5 as well so it is not one of these that has had a few mods. The XL5 would have been quite a bit cheaper to produce that a tractor because there is a lot less materials required to build them and I think they were a great little mower and with the rear engine they were much easier to steer than having the motor lumped over the front end. They are hard enough to steer and the rear mounted motor does make it easier. I built a Stallion for a bloke a year or so back and put a Chonda motor on it and he called in a few weeks ago and said it was a fantastic little mower and he was really happy with it

The styling is 1980's angular, prd. I feel it is a rat rod rotary, modified from Greenfield mechanicals. I think we need to hear from crumpet now. Cheers----------------- Jack

Hi all Yes this is mine and it runs very well. Its just that the forward side of the friction drive is starting to not work as well as it should might need adjustments done. Here is some more pic to make you think of what this wild machine could be ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2017/04/full-11026-34039-img_6261.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2017/04/full-11026-34046-img_6257.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2017/04/full-11026-34051-img_6258.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2017/04/full-11026-34052-img_6259.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2017/04/full-11026-34053-img_6260.jpg)

G'day all Mower Sleuths
Thanks Crumpet for the images. It looks like a well-thought-out production machine.
I feel those Magnificent Greenfield Men and their Cutting Machines could be right... If so, I still don't understand the issue of identity.
Or, is it a secret project by Namco to promote their CoolButt range of ride-on seats. I do not feel I can answer this...
