Hi All
Picked up this great mower on the weekend, chassis is in very original condition, never been repainted, original sticker on catcher is in reasonable condition. I am thinking this is likely late 60's? The engine looks to have been changed, has a 2.5hp Briggs built in 1976 on it now. Would this mower have originally been fitted with a Kirby?

P.S. Can anyone tell me why my pics uploaded from my iPhone display sideways by default? Work around is to edit the pictures, rotate each one 270 deg, save it, edit it again and rotate again in same direction as previous a further 90 deg (now back in the original orientation). Uploaded pics display fine after doing this?

Hi Scott,

Yes you are correct, it would've originally had a HK25 Kirby fitted on it.

As far as picture orientation is concerned that question is best left for Jack as he knows a bit more about the site technicalities than I do.

PS. your place is looking rather much like mine, too many mowers.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi All

If I am looking for a Kirby HK25 engine for this SB45, is there any particulars I should be aware of if I am trying to keep it era correct i.e. I would like a Kirby engine from the 60's?

Hi Scott,

If you get a ID Plate marked "HK25" you can't go wrong as they didn't use the H4-4A with the primer bulb until the 1970's and as such the HK25's are all pretty much the same.

The only thing that differed was the smaller tank or the larger tank. I always liked the look of the larger tank but that was fitted mainly to the HK30 but also to the 25 in limited amounts. This would've been done due to the price Scott Bonnar paid for the engines at the time. Engine manufacturers generally offered discounts on over supply stock they had on hand to clear and thus if HK25's with larger tanks were cheaper one week then that's what they would buy a bulk purchase of.

there are a few of those available in Adelaide but as it's gotta go to Sydney this will raise the price dramatically.

You should be able find used units in NSW without too much drama I feel. The one main thing to take into account is the carby butterfly shaft and how much wear there is on it as thats the component that becomes very lose and thus induces hunting into the engine revs.

Cheers,
BB.
