Afternoon forum.

It been a few years since getting some great advice and fixing my mower. This time I need some help with the 2stroke engine on my edger. Please advise on the correct forum to subscribe to so that I can register and start the repair.

Hello Stuart.

You've got me curious...
Scott Bonnar never made a 2-stroke edger.
Could we have an image of the machine?

Please post here with a description of problem.

Yes sorry, my mistake, I have been working on my outboard engine as well. Needless to say, I need some help. 4 Stoke, model 60112, 0406-01, 77072901.

I am unable to get the motor to turn over. I have replaced the spark plug, cleaned the carby, new fuel and tried some aero start. Still no luck.

Stuart, have you checked to see if you have spark?

I have taken the spark plug out of the motor body, left it connected to the lead and pulled the starter cord but have not seen any spark. Is this the correct way to test?

Hello Stuart
I'm no expert, but the answer must be 'No' to your question.
This tells us there is no spark, but the problem could be as
simple as a faulty spark plug.

Thanks to Norm who is an expert in this area.

The better approach, now, is to remove the lead from the plug,
and place the lead end within a couple of mm from a metal surface
on the engine. Test for spark.

Please let us know how you progress.

Plug body must grounded to cylinder during the test but just testing for spark from lead to ground via a small gap works too. Note spark plugs work out the engine but under compression sometimes.

As said could be a bad plug. Also note this is an old points system if not converted and point contacts could be dirty too.

If you have fire then check the compression. On this older of an engine (1977 model)and being a L-head the valve clearance may closed up to a point where you have no compression to start with.

thanks all. I have taken my edger plug and tested it in my mower and a spark is clearly visible when i pull the starter cord so i am assuming there must be a problem with the lead or other components that power the spark plug? Next steps?

With no spark with known good plug then you need to pull the flywheel and check the points plus clean them; unless, the ignition system has been converted to a Magnetron ignition system. I still fine a lot engines from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and early 80's that have never been converted.

Jack, can you please advise on the correct subscription to join to progress the repair of my Scott Bonnar Engine? The forum has provided some good general assistance but from what I remember back in 2013 when Outdoorking helped me fixed my mower, I need to pay a yearly fee. As the subs are non refundable I want to make sure I join the correct subscription from the outset.

Hello Stuart

The answer is Engine Manuals and Parts Lists
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/u...s_&_Stratton_Workshop.html#Post20019

The Manual you need is 270962 [single cylinder L Head]
[It's about 388 pages - which you can download]
[Local libraries may also hold this manual].

Hope this helps.

Jack, I think he actually needing the Repairman's Handbook that covers the 1919-1981 engines since it is 1977 model.

Hi AVB

Yes, you might be able to help.
p/n 270962 was the number for the older manual as well:-

[Linked Image]

The Briggs site has a pdf matching model series to manual.
It lists 270962 as suitable for 6 Series engines.
The Manual we have seems to cover the 6 Series in places.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks. As I am a complete novice with engines, I need assistance rather than just a manual. last time i was working with someone who guided me through the process. I was able to post photos and get step by step feedback. I think it cost me $15 for the 12 months. Do i need to join one of the repair & maintenance forums?

G'day folks,
We can start here with some excerpts from a Briggs Manual; P/No 270962 Single Cylinder L-head engines.
These are the 'won't start' checklist, of procedures to work through in sequence, as a systematic diagnostic approach.

In the older models with points/condenser ignitions, we add checking/cleaning/adjustment of those components to the end of this list.

This is where Briggs have created some confusion, by re-using the original part number for the early pre-Magnetron engines' manual! mad
I have a 1981 dated print copy of the manual you have pictured here, and it has the points ignition info only.
The current #270962 omits the points info, and only covers the Magnetron electronic ignitions.

Yep, everything but the older points ignitions.
This info is now found only in the current Briggs P/No CE8069; Service Manual for Out of Production Engines 1919-1981.

Edit: And a very useful section of the print 270962, S14 General Theories of Operation, has not been carried over into CE8069.
As far as I have been able to find out thus far, Briggs has not created any stand-alone PDF doco which incorporates this info, either.

Stuart

This site has info.
Type 'clean point briggs' or similar search bar.
The principles are the same on all small briggs.

Also YouTube has a number of videos on this.

You will also need to consider the fitting of electronic
ignition - if the points or condenser are worn.

Hope this helps.
