PART THREE – Victa Safety SealSpecial mention should be made about the documents that
accompanied the Operator Manual for the 1969 season.
I have written extensively about how the garden equipment
manufacturers changed their
philosophy to lawnmower safety
from about the mid-1960s. This resulted in an industry-agreed
code for lawnmower safety ib the late 1960s.
Turner and
Victa were the clear leaders in this change.
Accompanying this Victa manual were two documents: - First, a double-sided cardboard seal – the Safety Seal – that was a stylised
metaphor for the old wax seal and blue ribbon of older times. Safety
was being taken seriously!
Second, there was a separate
‘Guide to Safer Mowing’ cardboard sheet
[one-sided] that summarised, in 21 points, the guide to mowing safety.
The Victa
Safety Seal was mentioned in factory advertising from
late 1968… It is fortunate for history that both these documents survive.
A part of my collection, I am glad they are recorded here...
