Picked up very cheap a Stiga SD9813 ride on with a blown engine. Everything else is good on the machine. The engine is a Global Garden Product (GGP) model TRE0701 432cc type which looks to be a 13.5 HP unit. I am intending on replacing the engine with a new one but I am mindfull of not over spending. Does anyone have an engine they are willing to part with. Only has to be usable and doesn't need to be pristine condition. Failing this any advice on getting an engine without overspending ?

Hi Cliff, only thing I know of is ebay and type in vertical shaft motor. Problem is there is always mowers out there with missing motors so second hand motors are always in short supply

Thanks NormK. I have been looking into ebay but found myself faced with brands I have never heard of such as Miller Falls (2 year warranty) RATO (1 year warranty) Jono & Johno (2 year warranty)
Has anyone had any experience with these virtually no name brands ?
I realize you get what you pay for but for my purposes I dont see putting 1k plus into an engine (eg B&S brand) cost effective. No rush though so I will keep on looking but if one of these brands as above seen OK I may go this way.

Cliff you are very limited for choice, I fitted one of the $160 RATO brand motors to a small Greenfield early last year and it must be going ok because I would have heard about it. No news is good news

I have serviced a few Millers Falls horizontal shaft engines that have been fitted with water transfer pumps and apart from a few 'Friday night' examples they seem to last when used occasionally. They don't last long when used every day at full throttle on water tankers though. Otherwise they seem to be ok. The crankcase walls are half the thickness of a genuine Honda GX and the throttle mechanism is very flimsy.
However, I don't know what the vertical shaft Millers Falls engines are like in terms of longevity.

Hopefully I have solved my problem. Online adds resulted in picking up a running 13hp B&S engine (28M707-0178-01) in what remains of a Husqvarna model LT1538 for $250. Will pull the engine and decide on if I will sell on the rolling chassis (no bonnet unfortunately) or dismantle it and sell on parts like wheels, gearbox/diff, fuel tank, cutting deck and/or deck and blade spindles etc. Might make some money back with some effort.

I realise I may be moving a bit sideways from the original question regarding this mower but it is still the same machine I am having issues with. I have fitted the new (second hand) 13HP B&S and wired it up. I now do not have power to the starter solenoid with the ignition switch in the start position (no power in any position) I have traced the wiring back into the look and it goes to an electronic circuit board up under the dash. What does this actually do ? Its part number is 25722433/0 though overseas the part number looks to be 125722433/0 (a 1 in front). I could jumper this to get the power to the solenoid but this thing must do more than complicate my life. In the mean time to sorting this, I will ensure all micro switches are not the issue but any input appreciated.
