Can anyone tell me which direction ( anticlockwise or clockwise ) to remove the blade,
and how to determine this on all machines?

The machine is the same as in this post (Mobilco Heavy Cut).

G'day Stormy

A warm welcome to these forums.
I have contacted Engineer Gadge for comment.

The blade holder spins anti-clockwise which suggests a
LH thread on the blade holder.

Let's wait and see.

G'day folks,

Yep, on the earlier models of Heavycut slashers made during the Mobilco era, with horizontal shaft engines and CCW cutter rotation, the nuts on both ends of the cutter spindle are LH thread.

That cutter rotation is about the only time left hand threads are found on mowers. Most Greenfields, except for early models, use it.

There's a quite rare owners manual/parts list up on FleaBay just now; if you don't snag it, grabbing copies of the pics would be worthwhile. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/262778241468?rmvSB=true

Some of the earlier Mobilco made examples had a female thread in the spindle ends. Still LH thread, though.

A NOS bolt for one, from my bits'n'pieces collection:

Thanks Gadge, I've been trying for a number of days to loosen these nuts...just to confirm that to loosen this nut I will be going clockwise?

What is the best penetration spray?

I guess the next trick is to heat the nut? any tips on doing this?

Thank you smile

G'day Stormy,
I'd recommend CRC 5-56 or Inox as good aerosol penetrating lubricants. Currently I use Inox liquid in a trigger spray, or 5-56 in the aerosol can.

Yes, clockwise to undo, with LH threads.

As these are BSW [Whitworth] threads and hex sizes, there won't be a metric or SAE inch AF socket/spanner size that's an exact fit, unless the nuts are a 'non Brit standard' hex. It may be necessary to buy a 'metrinch' type, or find a six-point socket that will work.

Impact is the next technique to try, if possible. Either a rattle gun and socket, or ring spanner and hammer, if a suitable spanner is available.

These nuts were always pretty tight, and on a machine of this age, odds-on they'll be rust-bound as well.

Cheers,
Gadge
