Old story, my son lent to a friend of ours my shredder last Christmas, this bloke then lent it to his brother and it has taken me nearly 12 months for it to be returned. I had a look at it and the bottom of the shredder bowl was half full of water, with the hammers in the water pretty rusted up. I pulled it all apart and sharpened the blades and cleaned up the rust as best I could, hammers are now swinging freely. Then I decided to try starting it, it will run with fuel poured down the carby but no hope of running without that. I have pulled the carby, and the gasket was trashed and I seem to be only ably to find the gasket in a complete gasket kit, which is worth more that I'm prepared to spend on this muncher, because I will probably never use it again. Should I be able to blow/suck through the carby pick up tube, at this stage I can't. I haven't pulled the engine cowl to get the number because it is going to be difficult to get off and I can't see the numbers but I believe it to be in this engine number range 297615 397145 495603. Moral of this story, is don't lend equipment, The bloke who borrowed it is smart enough, but his brother, not so smart

I assume the governor spring hooks over the governor arm, I don't think it was connected when I removed the fuel tank Model number, I finally got the cowl off is 135212

Yer, I have a firm rule these days - never lend anything that cuts. And for stuff I will loan out, I do lay down the law, regarding on-lending being verboten . OK Norm, here's an IPL download which should cover this one: http://bsintek.basco.com/MDEXResultsPages/PDFDisplayPage.aspx?fileName=Z6hssAVJ1DajIWhich gasket were you after? The carby to engine one is available on its own, and quite cheap if you go aftermarket - https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/index.p...arch_in_description=1&keyword=273113Then again, the full carby overhaul kit is $31, aftermarket once more - Briggs P/No 494624. These Pulsa-Jet carbies are pretty simple. With the fuel pickup tube in place on the carby, you won't get much flow by blowing or sucking - there is a flap valve close to its top end.
Cheers, Gadge

Thanks Gadge, I am after the carby to fuel tank gasket. Do you know if the pick up tube is threaded into the carby body or is it glued in. There isn't very much you can do with these carbys, apart from clean them and hope they work

Norm, they usually unscrew, if the footpiece has a hex. The other way to check is to pull off the fuel pump cover. That's the one on the side of the carby, visible in the above shot. Then you'll be able to do the suck/blow test. And then that pump diaphragm should really be replaced, but they're under $5. P/No 272538.
As regards that gasket, there are three different types, and all are available singly. However, two are cheap - $3 or less, and the other is ~$9. You'll have to go through the IPL to work out which one you need.
Cheers, Gadge

norm for carb to tank gasket I have always just made them from gasket paper which auto barn super cheap sell. easy to make the gasket with a hole punch set and scissors if you clean carb and change diaphragm and if still wont suck fuel and wont keep running could be exhaust valve clearance has closed up make sure clearance for exhaust valve is 0.010 thou other wise it wont suck up fuel

Freebird, very tricky complex gasket to make freehand, some easy to make some not, and this one is one of the nots. It was running fine till the numnut left it outside for the last 12 months and you know the amount of rain we have had this year. I never expected to get it back, was surprised when my son brought it back the other day, I expected to get some story that it had been pinched.

norm the gaskets are not at all hard to make . I would recommend if you don't already have a set to buy a leather punch set . cost around 12 bucks for 9 punches if old gasket is destroyed and cant be copyed I smear the carb face where the gasket sits with grease I use a large punch to make holes large enough in the gasket paper so I can slide it up to the carb gasket face the carb gasket face which I have already smeared lightly with grease now will leave a mirror image of the gasket that needs to be cut out use scissors' to cut out the gasket then the small holes, bolt holes use the punches, with the larger holes if the punches I have are to small like for fuel pickup pipe ect I just use the largest punch I have which is 1/2 inch and use it to enlarge the hole. you can make very large holes with a smaller punch I never buy gaskets pulsa jet , vara jet even crank case gaskets I make them all this way for carbs i just buy the diaphragms. leather punchs sets you can buy on ebay for gasket paper I even use wheetbox paper with good results if you buy a punch set you need not buy gaskets ever again and no matter what day or time don't need to worry as you can just make one

Thanks Gadge, I am after the carby to fuel tank gasket. Do you know if the pick up tube is threaded into the carby body or is it glued in. There isn't very much you can do with these carbys, apart from clean them and hope they work Norm, The union between the plastic pickup tube and brass is basically a press on fit with a small clamp over the joint. Basically you slide a clamp up onto the brass tube and twist while pulling the get the plastic tube off. Sometimes you need to just cut off the old plastic tube. Getting the new tube is just about as hard to do; just do not forget to put that clip on the brass tube first. Also don't forget to clean out that brass tube before putting the new pickup. A side note here about that tower. They can get plugged up so bad that you got to remove those steel balls to clean out the idle passages. I have done two in the last three years. The carb to tank gasket basically come in two designs a 4 screw and a 5 screw version.
