Hi Guys,

While I'm working on the motor and waiting on parts, I thought I may start pulling my Rover Thoroughbred down and start the stripping and painting process. Ironically enough, I have also picked up a SB45 which I'll pick up this weekend(yay).

Anyhow, I have a few questions before I head in a direction I'm unlikely to return from.

What's the best method for stripping down the paint? I've read a few posts where folk have just given the old paint a good sand and then priming, but not sure how effective or how good this is verses other options?

What sort of primers should I be looking to use, and are there any particular brands I should look for?

I notice a lot of folk use spray cans, but I'm curious how great this method is verses other methods such as compressor spraying and such? Also, is it possible to get any form of customized paint placed in an aerosol for you to use?

Sorry for the newbie questions guys, painting isn't my strong point in the knowledge department, and would much prefer not to have to do it three times to learn my lessons if it can be avoided.

Cheers,
Chris

There are paint places that can put your colour in a can, I think I saw somewhere that one of the auto supply chain stores does it. Pressure packs have a high amount of thinner, around 30%, so coats tend to be thinner than what you can do with a spray gun and scratch more easily. I use Wattyl Rust Kill Epoxy enamel thinned 10% in my spray gun and am pretty happy with the result. If the metal is clean or only lightly surface rusted you don't need a primer but they also have a three step process for more heavily rusted metal. If the paint isn't flaky or loose a light sand will do the job to give the new paint something to bond in to. If it is bad, a poly strip disc on an angle grinder will remove the paint without harming the metal or you could get a sand blaster attachment for your compressor. I got one from Supercheap for $20 that works great on small jobs.

Thanks for the information Trev.

In regards to the can option, I noticed a couple of brands that do a kill rust style paint with UV properties. I can't recall the brand I'm referring too exactly, but apparently has a primer in the paint also. Would these sorts of paints do a good job, or is there something in particular I'm best looking for?
