Hi, I have a Honda GV 400 11 hp engine on my Deutscher ride on lawn mower, my problem is that it runs for about 10 mins then shuts down, will not go until it has completely cooled down When it has cold down it goes again, until now it has always started on the second pull always.

Hi Wheelybin, welcome to Outdoorking.

There are two main potential causes of a shutdown after a few minutes of running. The first is a temperature sensitive ignition module failure. The second is a moving blockage in the fuel line or float bowl, which passes fuel until it moves (with the fuel flow) into a blocking position - then drifts back out of blocking position when the fuel flow stops. In most cases, if it is an ignition failure, if you do a spark test immediately after it shuts itself down, it will probably not produce a spark. The standard way to check for a moving blockage is to disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor, place a cup under the hose, turn on the fuel, and see if it continues to run full-stream into the cup. If it does, remove the carburetor float bowl and see if there is crud in it.

We can talk about each of these tests in detail if you wish. Meanwhile, you might be interested in this thread:

In that case it took us way too long to get there, simply because it was a soft moving-mass in the fuel line, so it would pass every test except the sustained-rate-of-fuel-flow test.

I'll look forward to hearing more, Andrew. If it isn't ignition or a fuel line blockage, the other potential causes are listed in that other thread. We're here to help in detail with investigating any of them. Incidentally Honda engines seem to me to have reliable ignition modules, but of course with advancing age, just about all mower engines are vulnerable to accumulated crud in the fuel system. Most of us find it when it causes a problem, but probably not before that.

Hi to all,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I work away (mine thing) have been mowing again, have checked out the spark, after it stopped, their is some but not a lot, the colour of the spark plug is a light browny grey colour, Have blown out the carby as well, pulled the hole carby apart alls clean in side the other thing it is doing is it will start on full choke and run , but as soon as I bring the throttle back a bit it cuts out strait away.

Let's begin with basics. Please disconnect the fuel hose where it goes into the carburetor, place a cup under the hose, turn on the fuel, and see how long it takes to fill the cup.

Hi Grumpy,
Just timed the fuel takes about 1 min to fill a cup about 250 mls
Sorry did not know you had replied.

That sounds like an excessive time to fill the cup, Andrew. I suggest you go back to the fitting on the bottom of the fuel tank, disconnect the fuel line there, and see how long it takes to fill the cup directly from the tank.

Hi I would like to seek help in wiring up the alternator red wire to a Rover Rancher Auto drive model 1866. The Honda wiring diagramm show that this wire is to be attached for battery charging, however when I tried to attached to the battery (+) terminal it gives off a sparks. This engine has only one Red wire. This ride on has a 5 pin connections. Please advise. David

You need to start a new thread and give more details about what engine you have etc rather than tag on to this old one.
