Patrick, good point, most of them are usually stated as Briggs and Stratton compatible and they all have a 1 inch shaft. It is only the smaller capacity ones to fit push mowers that have the 7/8 inch shaft

Parick, just another point I'm curious about regarding the ride on mower motors is the bigger hp ones, the ones above 13hp. Do they retain the same bolt pattern, I think the would need to go to a bigger pattern because the overall dimensions of the crankase must be bigger. I guess the boys playing with the mower racing scene would know, bigger motors fitted to smaller machines

Hi Norm, these bigger B&S motors are well beyond my experience.

20hp is a big motor Sean, what size motor was in it, probably 13 hp, you can get those new for $400. I would think with the bigger motor you would have issues with the bonnet not fitting. I haven't used one of those motors yet but they seem to sell a lot so I guess they are fit for purpose

their just shite sean.. they should contain a "BUYER BEWARE " sign on them. they will have the same bolt patten as the briggs, whether it fits under the bonnet will depend on exhaust placement etc. my advice for what it's worth....... get yourself a S'H BRIGGS and save yourself from...

So Squizzy, have you used one of these motors, I want to know before I buy one. Second hand Briggs don't come up often and I personally would be very wary of one, why would anybody pull a good running Briggs off a mower in the first place? Always plenty of mowers for sale with blown motors so there will always be a shortage of them

thanks fellas, i have spoken to the owner and he doesnt mind "modifying" his bonnet to get a bigger power plant on. I just have to look into if the bolt configuration is the same. it says so in its advertisement. But i would really like to be sure cheers again fellas

i woudn't own one if you gave it to me Norm. they are so poorly made and usually have no spares back up, they are purely imported to sell to suckers thinking their getting a good deal. sorry if it sounds harsh, but from experience i can't not tell it as it is. as i said, BUYER BEWARE!!! the old briggs are made to rebuild and there's still plenty of spares out there for them, i would ALWAYS use a good/rebuilt briggs before one of those things your right to sean, there's plenty of 'non operating ' ride ons out there, and many have perfectly good motors on them!

Squizzy I sure wish I could find some of those 'non operating' ones with good motors. I watch the ones on ebay all the time and I can't believe the prices some of the junk goes for. It is one big gamble to pick this stuff in the hope the motor is going to be ok

Whats wrong with the engine you have Norm? i always reckon that unless a briggs has a leg out of bed, then it would be my first choice to start with. as for 'out of service' ride ons, check with mower shops , as often they will have dungers that people dont want to spend money on,( because they think they can buy a new one cheaper), so leave it with the shop, we've had many in with good engines , ebay isn;t the only place to look....... peole have long bagged briggs for being a crappy engine, etc, etc, well i can tell you matem that in the face of these crappy imports, they are going to look bullet proof!!!

Squizzy I have a Briggs that is locked up, I haven't looked at it, it was running well,no smoke or noises. I also think it has stopped charging and it needs that because it is not running a magneto, I converted it to coil ingition if I get a chance I will pull it apart tomorrow and see what has happened. I'm not sure the motor is worth spending the sort of money on it that it is going to need. I also have one in a Greenfield that I fixed up for a mate up the bush, it still goes well but is going through a fair bit of oil. It doesn't foul plugs but I would like to fix it up for him.

not in a public forum Norm.... yep, that's a possible leg out of bed, usually caused by over revving. if your motor is using oil but not smoking, sounds like the bottom seal is shagged. briggs motors dont have to be exxy to fix. a set of rings. valve grind and a coupla gaskets will usually do the job.

Squizzy, no leg out of bed, this motor was not smoking or using oil, it has just stopped. In reality none of this stuff is worth repairing, I just do it to fill in time. I spent probably between 5 and 6 hours today fixing a mates self propelled Honda. He took it to his regular mower shop and was told it needed a new gearbox $400 for the box and $100 labour. He asked me if I would look at it so I pulled the gearbox out, looked fine, put it back in adjusted the cable up, still nothing, then I discovered that the drive shaft had broken the sheer pin.As I said I messed with it for many hours(couple of broken studs, the usual sort of problems) and shop has to recover these hours so this mower with a good Honda motor was in reality cost prohibitive to repair. Sad fact of life these days.

leg out of bed am i correct in assuming this is leg out of bed. or are you hitting on norm? Sean, the 'leg out of bed' description actually refers to when a busted conrod pokes a hole through the crankcase, as it lets go.
Cheers, Gadge

exactly Gadge, a broken rod through the case, under the starter usually! problem we have these days is people want the cheapest option, and it's never been truer, you only get what you pay for.....trouble is, often you dont even get that... BUYER BEWARE

Squizzy, any idea where B&S motors are built these days, I guess there is a good chance they come from China as well, seems like everything else does. The reason why it has never been truer that people want the cheapest is because there is now a lot more cheaper options out there. With the internet people can easily see what people all around the world are paying for things and in Aus we get screwed over on so much stuff. I wanted a stator for a Honda motorbike, a dealer here wanted over $500 for it, I got it delivered from the States for $125

People are always pointing out how much cheaper stuff is in the States but don't take into account that their minimum wage is only about $9 an hour and they only pay for a gallon what we pay for a litre of fuel so a lot of their overheads are much lower. You've got to compare apples with apples.
