You are right Trev, and this is why Australia is on the road to going broke, Button started this many years ago by removing the tariffs from the motor industry and now we have shoved down our throats that "free" trade agreements are in our best interest. This is a one way road to financial ruin for a country like Australia. A new free deal recently was we would sell 300,000 tons of gas before one cent in tax would be paid by the offshore country. This country is run by madmen Sorry my mistake it is 300 million tons and Chevron is laughing at us http://www.theage.com.au/federal-po...-wealth-for-decades-20160412-go4kay.html

Sean, with a bit of luck he will leave it with you and you can either put another motor on it or just sell it as it is

Squizzy, any idea where B&S motors are built these days, I guess there is a good chance they come from China as well, seems like everything else does. All of B&S' side valve engines are now made in China, as are their smaller [push mower sizes] vertical and horizontal shaft OHV singles. Vertical shaft SV's went to China ca. 2000, as did the last of the smaller [to 2100 series] horizontal shafts in 2012. It's a bit hard to be definite about the E and EX Series push mower engines, as they do make SOME models in the US, but these are mostly different to their offerings on the OZ market. I note that they do claim that the 725EX is US-made, but as it's the sole US market side valve offering, I have my doubts. It could just be assembled there from Chinese parts, for that market only. Of their larger engines, the Vanguard vertical shaft singles are made in the US, and the Vanguard horizontal shaft singles and all Vanguard V-twins in Japan [using some US-made parts]. The Japanese factory is a joint venture with Daihatsu.
Cheers, Gadge

Norm, i reckon we are being sold a pup with the cheap replacement stuff thats flooding the market these days, A rebuilt Briggs is always going to be a better option than a crappy new replacement, regardless of cost. trouble is people are fooled that new is better, they over look the quality and backup completely. just as an interesting exersise for you.......go into a mower shop. or where ever they sell those new engines and have a look at them up close. then tell me what you think... as for Briggs being made in China, the country of assembly has to be listed as country of origin on any products now days, and what a lot of companys are doing is sending locally made parts to a factory they have in China for assembly because the labour is cheaper, i know Makita do that with some of their products, and maybe Briggs is to. but from my understanding, they are still proudly American. and not a waist of time sean, you created much good descussion , and now you should see if you can end up with the old mower for your time, i may even be able to source you a good running Briggs to repower it
I always come back to an Echo

I dont recon he will give me the old one, i cant get the one back that i lent him to do the job while he uummed and aahhed. HAHA. no he is a really nice fella who knows little about motors. and is learning. thanks again fellas

Squizzy, we are on a road to nowhere these days, everything has become a disposable item, buy something use it till it plays up and just get another one, everything is cheaper to replace than repair. In Melb we are now struggling to find a place that does small bore reboring, as the people running all those engine rebuilding businesses for the last fifty years get to retirement, they can't sell the business, so they just vanish. I was discussing this with B&B engines 12 months ago about repairing car heads, he said it was no longer worth doing, cheaper to replace it with a new head from China. We are a dying breed that want to keep old stuff going and we have no impact in the direction the general population is headed. A mate of mine has a gardening business and he wanted to know what sort of mower was available if he needed a new one in a hurry some time in the future. He went to the Red Shed and they couldn't believe he was still using a Honda HRU215 and a HRU216. He sees no reason to change as long as he can still get parts for them. At least the Honda motors outlast most of the machines they are fitted to
