Mind you they are like mowers (sound like 'em) and are moving towards electric nowadays. Interesting one is
here. But first one was done by the Italians Caproni (I think) in the 70's. It sounds a good idea until you (ahem!) hear it, apparently... and perhaps just to prove it
here is an example. I've flown with Paul Mander once in that type (ASH-25), perhaps in that particular aircraft but long before it was converted. Not surprised he did it, he was/is one of those go-get-'em, I-can-do-this high-achieving types.
One particular problem is the jet is on the fuselage centreline, gliders are generally made of glass-reinforced plastic (Grp/"fibreglass") which is a thermoplastic, and jet efflux is hot...
