Villager i susp

ect any tips on getting it going. it turns over by hand but scratchy.
needs some tlc i recon.
any advice on where to start gently getting this gem back to life would be greatly appreciated

these are great little mower seanw. however they are nothing like a victa when you start on the electrical and timing.
try following links regarding the villiers timing etc and you should find the info you need . heres one such topic.

thanks gizmo, great links mate. the first problem i have found is a broken ring. will look in the odk shop as the local mower shops just laughed at me. i need one by monday.
but what a mission pulling this one down without the correct spanners.

Recycling and Repairs
Looks like you got it from an Ikea outlet.
I don't mind a challenge, but you have an interesting project with this one. Hope it comes with assembly instructions.

Seanw that as bad as getting in a rider that need a steering pinion gear and the owner brings it in multiple boxes and then complains that he was charged a small fee for putting back together. I should had full shop rate and time.

Now I got a kid's ATV back in after the owner declined my estimate to fix 3 months ago. It now is stripped of all it body parts where they tried fixing it themselves. This all over what was a simple carburetor problem. I finally got to it yesterday and tried starting it to see where I was at. When it fired up it took off across the the lawn at full speed. Yelp they mess with everything and had the throttle adjusted to full throttle. Luckily I had only fill the carburetor fuel bowl for the test.

This 56 yr old don't run as fast as I once did but I did manage to catch it as it started doing circles.

I had one last year with an Enfield motorbike. The owner had pulled the barrel and piston out because he said it was overheating. I couldn't find anything wrong, piston,rings,barrel all looked fine. I put it back together and I pulled the carby apart to check it before I put it on and the main jet was sitting in the bottom of the bowl. Put it back together and it ran perfectly. Bike had been sitting in bits for well over 12 months because he didn't know what to do with it.

Well Sean,
I guess that's a hard lesson in not taking vintage mowers to a 'shop'. Bet there's more minor bits missing now, too...

Let's face it, no shop is ever going to put in the time it would take to chase up parts for a vintage mower, particularly an uncommon one like this. No way that would pay!
Dunno why they even bothered to pull it down, unless it was just for an excuse to get some coin out of you.

thanks for the input fellas. i am pretty sure it is all there as i was the fool that pulled it apart. paul the points were so corroded in place that i had to remove them with pliers wd and elbowgrease [Linked Image]

Ahh, OK; it appeared from what you wrote, that a shop had returned it in that state.

It really looks like only the insulating sleeve on the arm pivot, and the sleeve that goes over the main leaf spring, are cactus on your points set. Both could be made, if need be.

Those would be Villiers M2118E points, which are still available ex UK, if Steve @ VACES can't help you.

HERE and HERE are a couple of suppliers.

Note that the replacements are only the major parts, and don't include items like the insulating washers and bush that isolate the terminal and leaf spring from the bracket.

Hi Sean,

Points are the least of your worries, Id be concerned about that coil also.

Dont mind the Villager/Villiers, very basic machines, easy to build and simple to time, unfortunately the electrics are often shot, especially with coil corrosion.

As has been stated previously, most electrical parts are available.

This is a 70cc 5g yes? Whats its engine code Sean? ...

hello all. i have sourced a set of points for 15 dollars.
i will check the coil with a multimeter and hope it is between 3-5 ohms.
engine code 394X 11898. 70cc 3g i have been led to believe. vampire
