I acquired these beauties yay and was hoping for a little help confirming their identity.
If I'm not mistaken the Victa is an early 70's 125 utility. Probably not a great deal more to say on that.

On the other hand there's the mid 50's Lawn Scout.

I tried the search here on ODK and apparently there's some trick to driving it as I turned up nothing. However doctor Google brought me back here to one of Mr.Davis' postings on these machines. Does anyone know anything more of them? I had always been reluctant on "other brand" vintage mowers thinking they'd made their own motors and I'd never get parts or info on them then after reading about Popes Pope with the Villiers it all seemed to make more sense if the manufacturers used readily available motors already in production, like the Villiers. Then reading what Mr.Davis had to say I reckon it might be a long shot to find missing bits.

Any suggestions where I should start before trying to get them started? Just a carby clean, check for spark and perhaps some spray in the inlet to make sure she's lubed up before turning them any more?
If it's ok to ask, whatever happened to Mr.Davis? Is he likely to come back after a rest? He seems quite knowledgeable from the archives.

Hello slashnburn

There is little on the Lawn Scout at the moment.
It is the least common of the 'Lawn' range from Boundy Industries -
the Lawn Cub, Lawn Scout & Lawn Patrol.

My theory is that the Scout was introduced in about 1956 and 1957
to 'protect' the 'Patrol' name, which was then suffering from an
undeserved reputation, due to failures in the BMS engine. The
'Patrol' name would come back in 1958.

Pope's Pope has a Pope engine, but the Boundy machines also had
their own Boundy engines, characterized by a unique magneto design.
The Scouts were fitted with the Boundy Gold Cheetah engine.

I hope to write on Boundy this year.

No problems asking at all. We all continue to ask that question.
In fact, it was Mr Davis who first asked me to join this forum.
He said he needed a break (understandably) and returns spasmodically.
It would be great if he did return as a regular poster.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jack. I can poke around google a bit more knowing that.
So that's what she would have looked like in her former glory. Theres traces of red paint on the deck and half a muffler. I don't like my chances of matching the other half of the exhaust but you never know.
Kye, I'm liking your copper fuel line idea for this one.

Hi slashnburn

Here is a great thread on the Gold Cheetah Outboard:-
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=64072

Member Ausanzani may be able to help with parts & advice.
These are undervalued mowers in the current market.
Boundy was a serious competitor to Victa.

Cheers

G'day Jack thanks for the tip. I tried to PM Ausanzani but the error message "user not found" came up. I see his phone number there I might try calling/texting

G'day Jack thanks for the tip off. The more I poke around the net the more I find our mate Ausanzani has been spreading the good word of his rebuild across the net. I haven't contacted him yet (not in a rush to sign up to outboard engine websites) but it seems so far he is the most informed (and indeed closest to me) authority on the subject. I did find that it seems the seagull outboard ran these motors for a while. Still researching. Could be a longer term project than anticipated.

Hi slashnburn

Yes, Ausanzani is the man, I feel.
He is still a current member here, so I am not sure
why your PM wouldn't work.

In any case, I have his email, so I will alert him to your post.
These are fascinating engines. The company was bought by Wiltshire,
the famous manufacturer of 'stay-sharp' knives.

Cheers

Thanks Jack.
Wiltshire? It bewilders me why they'd buy in?

Hi guys, no pm's at my end.

I'm no expert but am happy to help out where I can. After reading this thread however, I am at a loss to understand what the problem/s is/are.

maybe start by listing them in bullet form, or if it's easier give me a call. After we have sorted, we can post up here to ensure no-one misses out on the info.

Regards,
AusAnzani

Probably as an easy way to diversify their product lines in the 1950's. A lot of Aussie companies did that back then, to cash in on the post-war domestic goods sales boom of that time.

Wiltshire File Co. pretty much specialised in just hand and saw files from its founding in the late 1930's until just after WWII, when they went into table cutlery as well.

Good point Gadge. Makes sense when you put it that way.

G'day AusAnzani firstly congratulations on your restorations they truly are to an exceptional standard. To be honest mate I have done nothing more than to turn the pull start by hand to make sure she wasn't seized. I wanted to find out a little more before i start pulling it to wee bits and can't find parts.
I can see I am missing the air cleaner and outer half of the muffler.
The carbys going to need some sorting.
The electrical cover at the front still looks solid.
I'll pull the cover off later for a look and to make sure that crankcase seal you speak of is still solid.
Is there anywhere I might be able to track down the muffler half and points or whatever else I may need?
I don't suppose they share rings or bearings with anything else if it comes to that?
Is here any other suggestions or words of wisdom you may wish to share?
Thanks mate.

Mufflers for these are not easy to come by. I have however seen 1 or 2 at various swap meets over the last 3 years. Might be your best option.

What you've got there is the older style carby. Does it sit properly over the intake or is there an interface of sorts between them. I do have one but it belongs to an older style CG outboard that I want to restore one day.

This is a good sign. Most of the broken ones I've looked at have been broken outwards. This generally implies crank case vapours have entered the ignition area and ignited causing a small explosion. A Sign of a bad seal around the pushrod that drives the points.

As mentioned above swap meets are probably going to be your best bet for the outer muffler section. When you remove the ignition cover you'll see the points are quite unusual. They contact surfaces will need a good clean, other than that you should be right. [/quote]

Can't answer that unfortunately.

Not really. Best to get it apart and start inspecting the parts. I'm sure you'll find most if not all will be ok and that you have a restorable engine there. Take time to check ie to make sure there isn't any play from top to bottom when you rotate. There's been some talk about that on other forums about crank related issues problems.

Keep posting here so we can see your progress, and if you get stuck, let me know as I might be able to scrounge some bits for you. No promises though!

PS: Where are you located?

I think there might be an engine for one of these, along with a Victa Special and a cut down display Villiers engine for sale on the Vintage Mowers: Buy, Swap & Sell Facebook page for $60 that has the muffler parts you need.

G'day AusAnzani thanks for the help. The carby is held on with a hose clamp so looks like plenty of room for improvement. I had started to think it might be a bit daunting but you've given me back some confidence. Thanks again mate.
G'day Kye thanks for the tip off. I don't have Facebook so my Mrs just signed up to your page and she is quite impressed.

Im in the area called the "Golden Plains" which is halfway between Geelong and Ballarat. Around 2 hours from Hamilton, where those motors are Kye.

Don't get too excited Kye my Mrs joined up. I don't have Facebook and to be honest your page is the second page I have ever heard of that I'd join if I had it. I doubt she'll spend much time there although I can live in hope. If I'm lucky she'll poke around sometime and suggest I should get another mower.......We can live in hope!
Anyway, With a bit of luck I'll be meeting the bloke with the Gold Cheetah in Ballarat in a month it's only an hour away. Thanks again. grin

Do you mean this weekend just finishing now because that doesn't leave a heck of a lot of time or next weekend? If it's next weekend I could probably knock up a "family photo"
