I picked up a TAS powered outboard yesterday, it was a versatile engine and was used on all sorts of outdoor equipment including mowers.

I put the Victa tank on as the one it had was plastic and broken, any ideas on what the original carb was ? Mine has a Chinese one fitted at the moment. Last question is how many cc's ?

Got it running and it dumped about 10 years worth of oil scum out of the exhaust

These are an interesting little engine/outboard.

Unfortunately I don't have any in my collection and therefore don't know much about them. That said, I see you're already speaking with Notav8 on another forum. He's a good guy an should be able to help you out.

Paul_c has probably found this already, but here's a YouTube vid of one of these running

I ran it some more today and it was putting out less smoke. Pulled off the barrel to check the rings because it was hard to start, they are worn and the bottom ring had less wear so I swapped them over and now it's starts first pull even when hot :-). I have ordered a set of rings from the Outdoorking store. Information for future reference is below

Engine size is 22 cc, piston size is 35mm, rings are 2mm wide approx 1.51mm thick

Original part number is 04100000212

Replaced by part number 6686116

Current part number is 0410000021

Tanaka still make outdoor equipment and the 22cc engine is in use in a modern form. Rings are $17.85 each, 2 required.

Expensive little suckers but good that genuine rings are still available and in Australia.

I would like to find a better muffler, mine is fairly rusty on the exterior.

Hi Paul

I am amazed that you tracked down the parts.
Do we have a model number for your engine?

It is clearly relevant as I think this engine was used on lawnmowers,
as you have said. At 22cc, this could be the smallest mower engine!

I like the word 'TAS' ... reminds me of a great State.

Hi Jack, Tassie is a great state. One I would like to visit soon, the model is TOB 120

T for Tanaka
O for out
B for board

120 for 1.2 hp

Tanaka have an easy system TCS is Tanaka Chain Saw and I think the numbers are hp etc. I found they were the correct rings due to another site listing the models that they fit QCP121 is a water pump. Same engine as the outboard and mower

Villiers also made a Tanaka engine in 1966 under licence, the P7. Here is an example of the engine fitted to mini bikes

The P7 is a very useful engine

I did a lot of cross referencing this afternoon, might be able to purchase a newer style of muffler ?

Hi Paul

It's just amazing what's out there.
You have given us some great information there. Thank you.

The lawnmowers of interest are the Walmac & the Minimaster.
I can find little on each.

Minimaster:-

I have the engine sorted out now, stripped down and cleaned, cylinder honed and replacement rings fitted. I obtained the correct fuel tank, carby and a better muffler.

Next is the leg and then a repaint :-)
