My dear old next door neighbor has got to the point where she isn't able to mow her own lawns. So she gets my son to mow for her.Last time she asked if her mower could be used to mow with.So she gave my son her fuel to put in it.
It's a 1990 Victa Sports with a 2 stroke power-torque engine with electric start.
After almost completing the lawns my son said to me "Dad there is something wrong with the mower. It won't run and then stops. It then takes a lot to start it again.'At which point I already knew what was wrong with it.I got him to finish the lawns with one of mine while I waited for it to cool down.
Once cooled down I took the muffler off and yep just as I thought.I believe that she gave him the wiper sniper fuel as it had a little bit of oil but not enough.Scored the absolute hell out of the piston and bore.So much so it ground the rings into the piston.
Now the mower belongs to me as she said 'can you use it?'
Here is some pictures.

So now I have a mower with a dead engine with a working electric start set up.So I'm thinking about putting the electric start set up on my mower.Don't know how but I will have to drill the holes out and tap a thread in.Without a tap and die set.Hmmmm.Has anyone drilled these holes before can it be done without cooling the drill bit or should I find someone to do the job for me?

G'day Blumbly,
Don't the newer style power torque blocks accommodate the electric start set up?
I'll have to have a look at one when I get home.

I know you removed the plastic piece from the block and the newer flywheels have the starter gear on them.
Cant remember if the holes are there though.

Older blocks don't have the cut out in the block and starter gear on the flywheel.

Picture of a newer style block. This wasn't a key start mower.
Also the newer flywheels have the stater gear.

Thanks Mark for the pictures. That one would have been a electric start at some point as they don't have the holes drilled or tapped out.Usually just a flat surface with no holes.Yes most of them do have the flywheel with the teeth on them so I don't have to worry about that.Just drilling and tapping is where my problem is.
I must admit that one is interesting as it has some kind of part number on it.I haven't seen many with that number there.

Ok, I see now.
Yes I agree that my engine was off a key start mower.

Is this is what you have?

I managed to get a tap to fit the holes on mine, it measured 6mm across the shank with verniers.
The thread is fine thread.
I dont have the exact size and pitch of the tap as the markings are rubbed off.

If you need info on how to tap, I can post something up, from a text book I have.
cheers

Awesome can I just borrow the tap and die fitting so I can do it as I haven't bought myself a set yet?

These are freely available and can be bought individually.
Have you considered using nuts and bolts, you may get a nut behind. That will be your call.

That's OK you could have said no.I would have understood.I was only asking,if you don't ask you just don't know.I'm not putting a nut behind it.I don't want to strip the mower down.
