Hi all,

I was given this Mighty Lite HLT26CDNB (Year 2009??)by a friend.

Apparently his wife ran it with straight petrol they day after he bought it and of course it has basically seized up and has sat in the shed since.

I have had it running by pouring oil down into the plug hole to lubricate it.

I am wondering if it is worth my time to pull it apart and hope it is just the rings, and if so is the cost to replace them, worth more than what it is worth even if I can source the parts.

Or should I just bin it?

Regards

Hi mate,

Not exactly sure on the price but the homelite trimmers are cheap machines from Bunnings. An all too familiar story. Last time I looked they only cost around $90 brand new. For my money not worth it. If it was seized you'll likely find significant scoring in the bore and piston.

I'd be grabbing parts off it - carby, HT lead, trimmer head, kill switch and binning the rest.

Kill switches come in handy for old daily driver mowers to just hook up an off switch if the normal kill switch is faulty.

The days of repairing low end consumer string trimmer is quickly coming to past. Homelite/Ryobi (TTI products) don't even sell the piston and cylinder separately anymore just short blocks. This primary due the new design that require pressing the crankshaft apart just to get the piston out and in.

I had a Homelite 4 cycle trimmer in here last week that all it needed was the starter clutch arms. They don't even sell them separately. They wanted the customer to short block the trimmer which the customer wasn't to put that much money into it.

A lot of the motors on the cheap trimmers are generic so you may pick up the same engine on a clean up day or from a tip shop. I have a few different ones laying around here, not sure if one will do to scavenge parts off but if you can post some photos with dimensions I'll see if I have something comparable.

Thanks for the offer mate, but I think I will give it a miss as it is not suitable for my use (5acres) and I was only going to put it on ebay if the $ cost to repair was worth it.

As others have suggested you can buy a new cheapy for around $90, so it's not worth the effort.

Again thanks for the offer.
