G'day all,
Just got my HRU196D back from the repair shop and it wouldn't start. I eventually figured something was up with the choke and using Grumpy's photos in another post, adjusted the pinch clamp on the governator plate.
Started like a dream! Thanks!
I have another potential issue now, if I move the speed control lever back from the choke position (anywhere from slow to fast) the engine stalls.
So I mow the entire lawn (90 min job) with the speed control lever in the choke position, which gives full revs.
Is this doing damage to the mower?

Go easy on me, I next to nothing about engines.

Hi,

What did the repair shop actually repair? (What was it in for?)

If the engine is run on full choke yes it will damage the engine but as to whether or not it is actually ON full choke is another question - if you have adjusted the throttle cable it may well not actually be activating the choke butterfly. When you were using it was it blowing black smoke? My advise is take it back to the repair shop. The problem is probably in the adjustment of the cable and/or inside the carby.

Possibly an oversight from the repairer or they got the apprentice to do the work.

Also :welcome:

did they leave a note on the repair card ? needs carb service or something like that ? was it ok when it went in there ?
sounds like blocked jet again , gummed up carby . what did they service by the way ?

It was originally in because it wouldn't start (ironic). When I picked it up, I started it outside the shop first pull.
When I actually had time and the grass was dry enough to mow two weeks later, it wouldn't start.
The repair shop replaced a damaged throttle cable and spark plug as well as a few minor parts (handle bolts etc), and did a service. I had been having issues with the throttle cable for a while and had been manually pulling it back and clamping it to the handle to keep the mower running. Obviously not a great, or permanent solution.
After adjusting the pinch clamp it started immediately and appeared to run the whole time on the same revs, no black smoke.
I guess I know I need to take it back to the shop, was trying to avoid the hassle of starting work late or finishing early. Also, I like learning how things work, however maybe I should stick to trees.

by chance . your not using fuel more than 2 months old ? no water in your container ? silly i know but amazing how many come in for repair and full of water bigshock

you look at the carb you will see a bolt (plug) just off centre on the float bowl remove it and see what comes out water will float on top of fuel that comes out , looks like drops floating on your mower base .
sounds like a blocked jet or water , easy fix if not a blocked jet , see how you go Treegirl
